WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Marley Rokas scores career-high 34 points against UMHB

BELTON, Texas — It was a career-high night for Marley Rokas.

Rokas dropped 34 points against the nationally-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders, unfortunately the Sul Ross State women's basketball team fell 90-74 at the Mayborn Campus Center on Thursday night.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lobos led 4-0 early in the first quarter after two buckets from Rokas.

Rokas added two more points as she made a pair of free throws to keep the Lobo lead intact.

The Crusaders then used a 10-0 run to take a six-point lead at the 6:42 mark.

Sul Ross State cut the deficit down to two when Victoria Aguayo landed two free throws and Rokas made a jumper in the paint.

UMHB made two straight three-pointers to take its lead up to eight.

The Crusaders led by as much as 10 with 2:51 to go until Cheyanne Bonilla and Aguayo made a pair of layups to cut the lead to six.

UMHB held a 16-point lead with 8:36 in the second quarter.

Sul Ross State managed to cut the deficit down to single digits when Caitlyn Corley and Emily Bunger each capitalized in the paint.

Rokas scored nine points in the second quarter to give her 17 at the break.

UMHB led by its largest lead of 21 in the third quarter with 4:58 on the clock before the Lobos used a 6-0 run to trail by 15 after three by Bonilla and a jumper in the paint by Rokas.

The Crusaders narrowly outscored the Lobos, 21-19, in the final quarter.

>> GAME NOTES:
  • Rokas led all scorers with 34 points while she grabbed five rebounds and had two steals and one block.
  • Rokas shattered her season-high mark of 23 points recorded on Jan. 6 against LeTourneau while she also bested her career-high mark of 24 points scored back on Dec. 1, 2022.
  • Rokas now has 939 career points, just 61 points away from joining the 1,000-point club.
  • Aguayo added with 10 points and four rebounds.
  • Bonilla finished with eight points and three assists.
  • Corley tallied six points, three rebounds and three assists.
  • The Lobos shot 93% from the free throw line making 28 of 30 shots. Seven players were perfect from the charity stripe.
  • The 28 free throws made mark a season-best for the Lobos. The previous season-high was 21.
  • Rokas was 9 for 9 from the free throw line. She is 22 for 22 from the line in her last four games.
  • Cierra Zapata went 5 for 5 from the free throw line to finish with five points.
  • The Lobos grabbed 30 rebounds. Ariana Escalante reeled in five boards.
