Lobos Fall to the Patriots, 70-56
Sul Ross Women's Basketball took the loss Thursday against UT Tyler at the Pete P. Gallego Center with a score of 70-56.
>>HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Patriots got the scoring started early with back-to-back three-pointers, giving the Patriots an early 6-0 lead. The Lobos answered back with four points of their own off a mid-range jumper by Caitlyn Corley and a layup by Victoria Aguayo. Following a layup off the fast break by TaMaiya Mims, the Lobos would go cold and the Patriots went on a run, scoring eight unanswered points. The Lobos would use the rest of the first quarter to chip away at the UT Tyler lead. A couple free throws and a second-chance jumper from Sophiya Bustillos, two free throws from TaMaiya Mims, a layup by Caitlyn Corley, and a three-pointer by Cheyanne Bonilla narrowed the Patriots' lead 18-17 at the end of the first quarter.
It took almost a full minute for the scoring to begin in the second quarter, with four missed shots between both teams. UT Tyler broke the cold streak with a layup and went on a 9-0 run until Corley broke it up with a second-chance jumper in the paint with 5:20 left in the half. Scoring was quiet the rest of the half, with only 16 points scored between both teams in the last five minutes of the half. Second quarter Lobos scoring was summarized by jumpers from Bonilla, Corley, Mims, and Jema Padilla, capped off by a couple free throws from Aguayo. The Patriots retained the lead at the half, 32-30.
Bonilla kicked off the second half with a jumper to quickly tie the game at 32 apiece. The Patriots answered back with back-to-back layups, but free throws from Aguayo and a jumper from Maddie Rhea with 7:45 left prevented a run. A run did come, however, as the Patriots scored 13 unanswered points over the next three minutes. The rest of the third quarter was largely uneventful as the UT Tyler lead fluctuated between 11 and 13.
27 seconds into the fourth and final quarter, Mims cut the Patriot lead to 11 with a quick layup off the fast break. The fourth quarter was like the third with the Patriots never enjoying a lead less than double digits. Kyra Taylor scored two of her four points for the game off of two free throws, as Corley, Aguayo, Bustillos and Bonilla contributed the rest of the Lobos' fourth quarter points.
