FOOTBALL: Lobos hold off Greyhounds for 33-28 victory

During the second week of the season, the Sul Ross State football suffered a tough loss to Eastern New Mexico.

With the loss still resonating in their minds, the Lobos came out and had a solid performance on both sides of the ball to pull off a 33-28 win over the Greyhounds at Jackson Field.

Sul Ross State tallied its first victory over Eastern New Mexico since 1970.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

Sul Ross State made some big waves on the opening kickoff as Yamil Oaxaca raced into the end zone on a 99-yard touchdown return with 14:47 in the opening quarter.

On their first offensive series, the Greyhounds came up short on fourth-and-three, turning over the ball to set up the Lobos on their own 44-yard line.

The Lobos had to punt the ball away on fourth-and-10.

Eastern New Mexico put together a 13-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off with a three-yard touchdown run by Jarius Stewart with 2:35 remaining in the first quarter.

The Greyhound defense spoiled the next Lobo series as Uatahouse Tu'ifua grabbed an interception.

Eastern New Mexico failed to convert on fourth-and-seven as the game went into a lull.

Brendon Martin helped spark the Lobos when he grabbed an interception with 2:38 in the second quarter.

Unfortunately, another turnover bit the Lobo offense as Samu Vave recovered a fumble and returned it into the end zone to put Eastern New Mexico ahead 14-7 with 1:51 to go until halftime.

Jordan Morales helped tie up the score at 14-all on one play as he scored on an 85-yard run with 11:49 in the third quarter.

Eastern New Mexico answered back with a 50-yard touchdown run by Azorion Sterling with 8:44 on the clock.

After missing a 57-yard field goal attempt in the first half, Carlos Arreola got a chance to redeem himself with 6:40 to go in the third quarter.

Arreola nailed a 57-yard field goal, his longest of the season, to get the Lobos to within four points.

Eastern New Mexico extended its lead to 28-17 after Ron Craten scored on a 23-yard run with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Sul Ross State had to overcome great resiliency after starting quarterback Andrew Martinez exited the game with an injury.

The Lobos went on to score 16 unanswered points in the final quarter.

Morales capped off a seven-play, 45-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run with 14:56 in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit back down to four points.

On the leg of Arreola, the Lobos made it a one-point game when he nailed a 47-yard field goal with 8:42 to go.

Carson Workman iced the victory with a 21-yard touchdown run with 1:50 left in the contest.

Eastern New Mexico had one last shot at the end zone on fourth-and-eight, but Quincy Blair was there to break up the pass.

>> WHAT THE COACH SAID:

"First of all, I want to talk about Andrew. We're wishing him a speedy recovery and we're going to be praying for him. Hopefully he can heal from his injuries rapidly." — Head coach Barry Derickson on his quarterback

"As far as the offense goes, way to not flinch after he went down. Proud of Carlos for hitting the 57-yard field goal and knocking the other through to keep us in the game. Our offense was able to grind it out." — Derickson on the offensive performance

"Defensively, I'm extremely happy for this defense. Shout out to both scout teams. They gave us great looks this week. I am extremely proud of both of those groups because if it wasn't for the scout team defense and the scout team offense this game and win would not be possible. Our defense turned up because of them and they did their job for the most part." — Derickson on the defensive performance

"I think it's really big for our football program that we beat both New Mexico teams. Texas pride all the way. Our guys took it personally after that first game. They were motivated for this game and they wanted to get this win." — Derickson on the win

"We still have to play great football. Those are two great teams. We're not scared of them. We're up for the challenge, but it's going to take another great week of preparation." — Derickson on the final two games of the year

>> WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:

"We came in very disciplined trying to stop the triple option. ENMU has a great triple option system. We just went over it all week. We just effectively got it done today. The guy who set the record, Ronin, is one of my close friends. Just to be in the same conversation as him is good. It just shows the work that me and my teammates put in every day trying to be the best that we can be." — Quincy Blair

"First off, I want to say all glory to God. The key was our offensive line. Due to our offensive line, I was able to do all that. Our offensive line is amazing. They stepped up today. They did everything they could for me. I knew this game was personal. We lost to them during the second game of the season. I took that to heart. This win showed us who we really are. This win means a lot to us. Big win for the coaches, everyone. It boosts our confidence. Our offense was on cue. Everyone stayed ready on the sideline. Everyone came in and did their job." — Jordan Morales
