VOLLEYBALL: Lobos drop match to Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — For the first time since 1995, the Sul Ross State volleyball team made the trek up to Midwestern State.

On Friday night, the Lobos suffered a straight-set loss to the Mustangs at D.L. Ligon Coliseum.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lobos were up 3-0 in the opening set after two kills from Natalie Hernandez and a service ace by Eliana Mata.

As the score was tied three times, the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run to pull away with a 10-point lead to take the set.

The score was deadlocked three times to start the second set before Midwestern State used a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead.

In the middle of the set, the Lobos trailed by four after a kill from Sarah Chavez, but the Mustangs closed out the game with a 4-1 run to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set featured eight different lead changes.

Sul Ross State trailed 10-7 until it used a 3-0 run to tie the score at 10-all. Chavez had a kill while Mata served up another ace.

Midwestern State then used a 6-0 run to gain some breathing room.

  • Hernandez led the way with eight kills.
  • Hernandez leads the Lobos with 94 kills.
  • Chavez added with six kills while Cassandra Espinoza had five.
  • Mata had 22 assists, three service aces and five digs.
  • Mata leads the Lobos with 223 assists and 14 service aces.
  • Miranda Acosta finished with eight digs.
