It was a night to remember for the Sul Ross State football program.
A lot of goals were checked off the list.
On Saturday night during homecoming at Jackson Field, the Lobos notched their first Lone Star Conference win as well as their first victory over a Division II opponent by defeating the Western New Mexico Mustangs, 34-20, to claim the golden tumbleweed trophy.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Lobos got the ball to begin the game as they tried to attempt some trickery on a fake field goal pass that was incomplete on fourth-and-eight.
Western New Mexico used a nine-play, 61-yard drive to get three points off a 23-yard field goal from Zach Gordon with 7:18 to go in the first quarter.
Sul Ross State's rocky start continued after a botched snapped on fourth-and-four led to a turnover on downs.
The Mustangs scored on four plays as Josh Magana capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 3:41 in the first quarter.
Sul Ross State was forced to punt on its next drive.
The Lobo defense was the catalyst as
Quincy Blair forced a fumble that was recovered by
Brayden Durocher.
Sul Ross State's special teams' unit later came into the clutch as
McLain Garrett IV blocked a punt on a fourth-and-three situation to keep the Lobos within reach.
As the Lobo defense kept the Mustangs at bay, the Sul Ross State offense finally got on the board with a five-yard touchdown run by
Jordan Morales with 57 seconds remaining in the opening half.
A 50-yard pass from
Andrew Martinez to
Austin Ogunmakin helped the Lobos get into the red zone.
Sul Ross State's defense continued to swarm all over the field as
Brendon Martin grabbed an interception to end the second quarter.
The Lobos took a 14-10 lead when Martinez threw a quick toss pass to
Vicente Luevano that resulted in a four-yard touchdown with 6:09 on the clock in the third quarter.
Though it was a small pass, it was history in the making as Luevano solidified his name in the school record book as the all-time leader in receiving touchdowns.
From that point on, the Lobo offense began to find a rhythm as it scored once more with six seconds to go in the third frame as Martinez threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Ogunmakin.
Martinez later showed off his speed as he scored on a 27-yard touchdown run to make the score 28-10 with 11:57 in the fourth quarter.
The Mustangs were outscored 21-0 until they got a 28-yard field goal from Gordon with 8:28 remaining.
Blair continued his stellar performance on defense as he had a pick-six, returning a touchdown for 70 yards to put the Lobos up by 21 points.
Western New Mexico scored once more with 1:55 left to go as Connor Ackerley threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Deuce Zimmerman.

>> WHAT THE COACH SAID:
"I think I'm just really proud of our guys responding at the half. We didn't play the best first half with our offense, but defense kept us in the game. They had a game. I'm so happy for the defense. They finally turned up and showed out. They've been well deserving of it. I'm also really proud of our offensive effort, responding the second half." —
Head coach Barry Derickson on the win
"I can't be happier for Vince breaking the record. Not only that but our entire offense turning up in the second half and producing." —
Derickson on Luevano's record-breaking career
"First off, we got the monkey off our back. We got our first Lone Star win. We're hopefully going to take that momentum and run into the next week. Angelo is really tough. They're atop the conference for a reason. They're my alma mater and they scheduled me for homecoming. I definitely have a little grudge against that. This is about our players and I want them to play extremely well." —
Derickson on moving the momentum forward
"He turned up. Had a rocky performance last week. This week he took it and ran with it. All these touchdown passes and also a touchdown run, I'm really proud of what he was able to show at homecoming." —
Derickson on Martinez' bounce back performance
>> WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
"The defense really came out today and executed. It was just a great moment and great feeling to get our first LSC win. It was good to put on for the team. Just the time and effort we put in to practice. We come in with our heads strong every day. We just take it one day at a time and make sure we get everything polished on game day." —
Quincy Blair
"It feels like the weight of the world is off my shoulders. I was one away for about three or four weeks. All I talked about all summer was being five away. When I was a freshman I had no idea that I'd even come close to it. Just to get it means everything to me. My teammates and coaches helped me get it. It wasn't a one-man show. I can't do everything by myself. This is my last year, I'm a senior, so just paving the way for all the freshmen, sophomores and juniors that have to come back another year. It's a huge win for the program. This gives guys a lot of morale, confidence. Knowing that we can win in this conference is going to give everybody confidence. We're hungry for more." —
Vicente Luevano
