WICHITA FALLS, Texas — After a bye last week, the Sul Ross State football team returned to the gridiron Saturday night.
The Lobos suffered a 40-21 loss to the Midwestern State Mustangs at Memorial Stadium.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Mustangs scored on their opening drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Knebel to Jimmy Trilla with 9:47 on the clock to cap off a nine-play, 76-yard drive.
Sul Ross State punted away on fourth-and-seven on its first offensive series and then on its next drive failed to convert on fourth-and-eight.
On nine plays, Midwestern State made the score 13-0 after an eight-yard touchdown run by Knebel. The point after attempt was blocked by
Mekhi Harris with 40 seconds remaining.
The Mustang defense got a pick-six from Larry Donnell, who returned an interception for 96 yards with 8:53 in the second quarter to make the score 20-0.
Sul Ross State went three-and-out which allowed to Midwestern State to put together a seven-play drive that resulted in a 27-yard touchdown pass from Knebel to Demonte Green with 3:13 left in the quarter.
Trailing 27-0, the Lobos managed to put together a positive drive as
Andrew Martinez erased the shutout with a 21-yard touchdown run.
The Mustangs got a 27-yard field goal from Joseph Carlson with 19 seconds to go before halftime to make the score 27-7.
Midwestern State's defense recorded its second pick-six in the third quarter as Karter Houchin returned an interception for a 34-yard touchdown with 9:31 on the clock.
Sul Ross State managed to score twice in the second half as
Kye Callicoatte scored on a two-yard run and
Tucker Bridwell threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to
Yamil Oaxaca.

- SRSU finished with 301 total yards of offense.
- The Lobos led in passing with 240 yards while they had only 61 yards on the ground.
- Bridwell went 8 for 18 with 113 yards passing and one touchdown.
- Martinez had 102 yards passing while completing 9 of 18 passes with three interceptions.
- Kendrick Jefferson led the ground attack with four carries for 29 yards.
- Austin Ogunmakin finished with four catches for 90 yards to lead the receivers.
- Quincy Blair had eight total tackles.
- Brendon Martin, Evian Thompson and Elijah Gomez each had six total tackles.
