MEN'S SOCCER: Lobos use second half surge to defeat Huntingdon College

Marco Rey scores twice for the Lobos

SHREVEPORT, La. — For the first time since Oct. 22, 2021, the Sul Ross State men's soccer team has fought back into the win column.

The Lobos dusted off the skid by putting together a solid 4-1 victory over the Huntingdon College Hawks on Saturday afternoon at Mayo Field.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead, seven minutes into the first half.

The score remained the same at the break.

Coming out of the break, the Lobos kept their composure and struck the game-tying goal in the 52nd minute when Pablo Herrera found the back of the net off an assist by Angel Lugo.

From that point on, confidence was abundant for the Lobos.

Lugo gave Sul Ross State the 2-1 lead with a goal in the 60th minute on an assist by Herrera.

The flood gates opened and the Lobos extended their lead to 3-1 after Marco Rey found the back of the net off an assist by Jair Moreno in the 76th minute.

A minute later, the Lobos struck again as Rey tallied his second goal of the contest.

>> RECORDS: Sul Ross State (1-1); Huntingdon (1-2)

>> WHAT THE COACH SAID:

"They've just been good since they got here. Every day they come in and train hard. I'm extremely proud of all of them. We really dug in today. It was great. We just knew if we stuck to the game plan, it would come. We came out really good. We were playing our game. Once we got one, it opened up for us. We just kept doing our thing. We got a lot of guys playing a ton of big minutes. We tried out a new goalkeeper today, and he was excellent. For us, it just felt like we wanted more out of it. Going into tomorrow we're going to take even more from it. They know this is just the start. That just means the program is growing in itself." — Head coach Bailey Guffin on the win
