SILVER CITY, N.M. — Sul Ross State quarterback
Andrew Martinez had a solid performance during the season opener against future Lone Star Conference opponent Western New Mexico University on Saturday night at Ben Altamirano Field.
The Lobos held a 21-7 lead in the second quarter before the Mustangs scored 28 unanswered points to rally back and win, 42-28.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
Western New Mexico scored on its second play of its first offensive series on a 40-yard touchdown pass with 11:25 in the opening quarter.
The Lobos tied up the game with a five-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to
Travell Lumpkin with 13:48 in the second quarter.
Sul Ross State went on to score 21 unanswered points.
Martinez threw his second touchdown pass of the night on a 77-yard connection to
Kawasaki Latham with 7:52 on the clock.
With 2:42 remaining in the second quarter, Martinez found
Vicente Luevano for a 15-yard touchdown to make the score 21-7.
The Mustangs got a quick score with 17 seconds left until halftime in the form of an 18-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit.
Using a six-play drive, Martinez capped it off with a 21-yard touchdown pass to
Ahmonte Kendrick with 7:03 in the third quarter to give the Lobos a 28-14 advantage.
Western New Mexico answered back with a 38-yard touchdown pass on its next offensive series.
A turnover by the Sul Ross State offense allowed the Mustangs to score once more to tie the game at 28-all at the end of three.
The Lobos were plagued by four turnovers.

- Martinez completed 23 of 41 passes for 332 yards with four touchdowns while rushing for 40 yards on 10 carries.
- Martinez was responsible for 372 total yards of offense.
- Latham led the receiving corps with five catches for 132 yards and one touchdown.
