It was an entertaining match between the Sul Ross State men's soccer team and the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Wednesday afternoon at the Lobo Soccer Field.
Unfortunately, it wasn't the end result the Lobos had hoped for as they fell 4-2.
The game was called with 40 seconds remaining in the second half due to the lightning and incoming thunderstorm.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
Eight minutes into the match, play was halted due to lightning in the vicinity.
As play resumed after the 30-minute delay, Schreiner broke the ice by scoring in the 10th minute.
The Mountaineers extended their lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute with another goal.
Two minutes later, the Lobos answered with a goal from
Pablo Herrera that came off an assist by
Andrew Magana.
Sul Ross State got a golden opportunity presented when
Cristobal Rodriguez lined up for a penalty kick.
Rodriguez capitalized by finding the back of the net in the 40th minute to tie the game at 2-2.
The game became a lot more physical in the second half as six cards, including a red, were issued during the half.
Schreiner took a 3-2 lead on a penalty kick during the 50th minute.
The Lobos began to race against time as lightning struck near the facility and the thunder roared.
Pushing everyone up to defend, Schreiner scored on an empty net in the 89th minute.
