MARSHALL — On the first day of the American Southwest Conference baseball tournament, the fifth-seeded Sul Ross State Lobos showed some valiant effort.
It was a classic pitchers duel in the opening round contest as the Lobos overcame a 2-0 deficit to the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys by tying the game in the fifth.
The fourth-seeded Cowboys executed in the bottom of the ninth to win 3-2 via a walk-off single to advance to the next round, taking on No. 1 seeded East Texas Baptist.
After the loss, the Lobos had to regroup and take on sixth-seeded LeTourneau University in an elimination game.
Sul Ross had a hot start, but the Yellowjackets rallied back to win 17-9 on Thursday evening at Woods Field.

An error by the third baseman allowed
Tye Lindsey to get into scoring position during the rally in the top of the fifth.
Matthew Wheeler delivered an RBI single to erase the shutout.
Wheeler later scored on an error by the second baseman that came after an infield single by
Orlando Moreno.
Hardin-Simmons was held scoreless for four-straight frames before getting back-to-back singles in the bottom of the ninth to setup the RBI single to left.
Chris Ibanez tossed a four-hitter in four innings of work as he struck out two batters and allowed one earned run to earn the no-decision.
Cade Watson tallied five strikeouts in 4.2 innings of relief.
The Lobos had nine hits to the 10 recorded by Hardin-Simmons.
Aaron Morales,
Tristan Karels, Moreno and Wheeler all went 1 for 4 with a single. Lindsey and
Carsen Thor both went 1 for 3 with a single.
Jared Roiz finished 1 for 5 after he tallied a single in the top of the first.

The Lobo offense came out with lots of energy during the first inning against LeTourneau.
Lindsey made the score 2-0 with a two-RBI double to left center while
Lee Kubosh later hit a two-run home run.
Estevan Ortiz increased the Lobo lead to 5-0 when he hit an RBI single up the middle.
LeTourneau began to chip away as it cut the deficit to three runs in the top of the second before it flipped the script by taking a 7-5 lead in the third.
The Yellowjackets rallied for five runs in the third before adding on two more runs in the fourth to lead by four.
Primo Vasquez hit a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to chisel the deficit down to three runs.
LeTourneau added some insurance runs by getting an inside-the-park grand slam in the top of the seventh to make the score 13-6.
The Lobos answered back with a pair of back-to-back RBI singles by Lindsey and Thor in the bottom half of the seventh.
Alvaro Hernandez pushed across the final run for the Lobos in the ninth with an RBI double down the right field line.
Lindsey went 2 for 4 with a single, double and three RBI. Vasquez tallied a single and a home run to go 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Thor finished 1 for 5 with a single and an RBI while Hernandez had a single and a double to end up going 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Ortiz and Morales each went 1 for 4 with a single. Ortiz also had an RBI and a walk. Kubosh had two RBI to go 1 for 4.
The Lobos scattered 10 hits.
Gage Cobb fanned three batters while allowing seven hits and seven earned runs in three innings.

Connor Archer,
Aidan Mow,
Ian Craigie and
Dean Foley all came out of the bullpen.
The bullpen compiled five strikeouts while allowing 10 hits.

- The .324 team batting average ranked second in the conference, six points behind the conference-leading ETBU Tigers.
- Sul Ross ranked third in the conference with 252 RBI.
- Lindsey has the third-best batting average in the conference.
- Lindsey leads the conference in on base percentage while he ranks third in doubles.
- Thor finished with a team-high 37 RBI and six home runs.
- Vasquez led the Lobos with three triples, which ranked second in the conference.
- Craigie's four saves ranked third in the conference.
- Cobb and Watson led the pitching staff in strikeouts (33).
