SOFTBALL: Sul Ross suffers sweep to Hardin-Simmons

Lobos come up short in Game 2

ABILENE — On Friday evening, the Sul Ross State softball team suffered a sweep to Hardin-Simmons by the scores of 8-0 and 7-5 at Lou Morton Ellis Field.

>> GAME 1:

The Lobos were held to three hits.

Samantha Chavez and Andrea Hernandez both finished 1 for 3 with a single. Hernandez singled in the top of the second while Chavez hit a single to center in the third.

Jenna Spencer tallied a single in the fourth to go 1 for 2. Spencer also reached on a fielder's choice in the second inning.

Hunter Montes suffered the loss after throwing three innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits. Erin Trevino pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing two earned runs on three hits.

>> GAME 2:

The Sul Ross offense came out with a spark in Game 2 by taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Jaelyn Zuniga delivered the two-run home run in the first frame.

Hardin-Simmons tied up the game in the bottom half of the second and then was held scoreless for three straight innings before pushing across four runs in the fifth to lead 6-2.

The Cowgirls scored once more in the bottom of the sixth.

Down to their final inning, the Lobos scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Madison Hodges reached base on a one-out single while Veronica Rodriguez reached on an error.

Montes then hit a single to load up the bases for Chavez who hit a double to left to bring in a run.

Annika Canaba later drove in pinch runner Kyndell Garcia on a sacrifice fly to right.

Sul Ross tallied six hits.

Chavez finished 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI while Zuniga went 1 for 3 with the home run and two RBI.

Hodges and Rodriguez each went 1 for 3 with a single. Canaba tallied a single, a walk and an RBI to go 1 for 2.

Leanza Chambers threw 5.2 innings allowing five earned runs on 13 hits. Briannah Meijas faced one batter in a scoreless 1/3 of an inning.

>> RECORDS: Sul Ross (1-6, 1-4); Hardin-Simmons (15-2, 5-0)

>> UP NEXT: The Lobos close out their three-game series in Abilene with a single game at 12 p.m. Saturday, March 11.
