WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Five Lobos make ASC All-Conference team

After posting a record of 15-11 overall and a conference mark of 11-7, five Sul Ross State women's basketball players were named to the 2023 All-American Southwest Conference team.
 
This year's team tallied the best overall record and conference mark during the ASC era.
 
>> Marley Rokas, Forward, Sophomore (Universal City, Texas):
 
Marley Rokas earned first team all-conference honors. This is the second-straight year where she has been honored by the ASC as she was named to the All-Freshman team last season.
 
She becomes the first player to earn first team honors since 2021 when teammate Vania Hampton earned first team All-West Division recognition.
 
Rokas led the Lobos with 362 total points. She averaged 13.9 points per game to rank third in the conference in scoring.
 
She also grabbed 195 rebounds and tallied 50 steals, which ranked second on the team.
 
Rokas was the second-best free throw shooter in the conference, making 96 of 113 shots (85 percent).
 
She averaged 30 minutes a game as she started all 26 games she appeared in.
 
Rokas finished with six double-doubles. She scored a season-high 24 points during a 96-60 win over the University of the Ozarks on Dec. 1.
 
In 23 games, Rokas scored 10 or more points. On five occasions she tallied 20 or more points. Rokas also led the Lobos by making 127 field goals.
 
>> Melody Martinez, Guard, Freshman (Seminole, Texas):
 
Melody Martinez was named Freshman of the Year while she also earned third team all-conference honors.
 
Martinez is the first Lobo to earn Freshman of the Year honors since 2016 when Kenya Miles was tabbed as ASC West Division Freshman of the Year.
 
In addition, Martinez was named to the All-Freshman team.
 
Martinez scored 271 total points to rank third on the team and fifth in the conference as she averaged 13.6 points a game.
 
Her 31 made three-pointers are second-best on the squad and sixth-best in the conference.
 
Martinez also ranked fifth in the conference with 40 steals.
 
She scored a season-high 26 points during a 79-77 win over the University of St. Thomas on Nov. 27. She came close to breaking her season-high total when she tallied 25 points during a 79-63 win over McMurry on Dec. 8.
 
Martinez recorded 10 or more points in 15 games.
 
>> Vania Hampton, Forward, Junior (Austin, Texas):
 
Vania Hampton was named third team all-conference to become a three-time all-conference player.
 
Hampton scored 245 points while tallying a team-high 197 rebounds. She was also tied for the team lead in blocks (12) alongside Marley Rokas.
 
She also recorded 38 steals and a team-high 134 defensive rebounds.
 
Hampton ranked fifth in the conference in rebounding.
 
She caps off her career with 799 points to rank 13th all-time while she ranks sixth all-time in rebounding in program history.
 
Starting all 26 games, Hampton's best performance came during a 99-86 win over Schreiner on Nov. 26 where she scored 20 points.
 
Hampton recorded three double-doubles while she tallied 10 or more rebounds in five games.
 
>> Brianna Martin, Guard, Senior (Mabank, Texas):
 
Brianna Martin earned honorable mention honors.
 
Martin finished with 277 points to rank second on the team in scoring. Her 60 steals rank first on the team.
 
She ranks second on the team with her 62 made free throws.
 
Martin finished as the conference leader in steals and fourth in made three-pointers with 41.
 
Her best performance came during a 99-86 win over Schreiner on Nov. 26 where she scored 23 points.
 
Martin's 12 steals grabbed against LeTourneau on Feb. 11 are tied for the most steals in a game alongside former Lobo, Holley Halbrooks, who set the record on Dec. 6, 1997 against McMurry.
 
Her six 3-pointers made against Schreiner on Nov. 26 rank second in the single-game records.
 
>> Emily Bunger, Guard, Sophomore (Rankin, Texas):
 
Emily Bunger was named honorable mention all-conference.
 
Bunger tallied 144 rebounds, 21 steals, 24 assists and scored 159 total points in 26 games played. She finished ranked third on the team in rebounds.
 
She scored a season-high 15 points against Hardin-Simmons on Jan. 26. Bunger also recorded two double-doubles.

Bunger hit the game-winning three-pointer to lift the Lobos over Concordia-Chicago on Nov. 12.
