BASEBALL: Lobos drop conference opener to East Texas Baptist

Tristan Karels and Carsen Thor homer in Game 1 and Game 2

The Sul Ross State baseball team dropped their conference-opening doubleheader on Friday night to East Texas Baptist by the scores of 13-1 and 22-4 at Kokernot Field.

>> GAME 1:

The Lobos were out hit 15-6.

Sul Ross scored its lone run on a solo home run to left center by Carsen Thor in the bottom of the fourth.

ETBU rallied for six runs in the top of the second to lead 7-0 through two innings. The Tigers tacked on five more runs in the fifth.

The Tigers got three home runs in the contest, which included two from Brett Wagner. Wagner hit a grand slam in the fifth.

Offensively for the Lobos, Jared Roiz finished 2 for 4 with two singles while Mateo Saenz, Tye Lindsey and Aaron Morales all went 1 for 3 with a single.

Thor went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Chris Ibanez allowed eight hits in two innings with one strikeout. Jacob Salinas came in to relieve, throwing two innings of one-hit work with two strikeouts.

A.J. Lear gave up two hits in 1/3 of an inning. Dean Foley struck out four batters and allowed four hits in 2.2 innings.

>> GAME 2:

ETBU scored six runs in the first and seven runs in the ninth as it scattered 16 hits.

The Lobos ended the shutout in the bottom of the second when Morales hit an RBI single and Estevan Ortiz followed up with an RBI single to left to make the score 9-2.

Tristan Karels later hit a solo home run down the right field line in the sixth.

During the bottom of the ninth, Sul Ross got its final run of the nightcap on an RBI single by Ricardo Franco that drove in Morales.

The Lobos had nine hits. Primo Vasquez had a single and a double to go 2 for 5.

Lindsey finished 1 for 4 with a double while Morales went 1 for 4 with a single and an RBI. Matthew Wheeler tallied a single and a walk to go 1 for 2.

Ortiz hit a pair of singles to go 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Brad Ansley got the start throwing two innings allowing six hits while he tallied a pair of strikeouts. Gage Cobb came in for relief, putting in five innings allowing two hits.

Christian Loveless, Derek Rojo, Corbin Dube and Alvaro Hernandez also made appearances out of the bullpen.

>> UP NEXT: The Lobos close out their three-game series with ETBU at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at Kokernot Field.
