BASEBALL: Sul Ross preps for conference with an exhibition against Wayland Baptist JV

Lobos sweep Pioneers, 10-4 and 9-6, Saturday afternoon

Thirteen days away from the start of American Southwest Conference play, the Sul Ross State baseball team is preparing for the road ahead.

On a chilly Saturday, the Lobos took on the Wayland Baptist University JV squad for an exhibition doubleheader at Kokernot Field.

Sul Ross scattered 13 hits in Game 1 to win, 10-4, in seven innings.

In Game 2, the score was tied 6-6 until the Lobos pushed across three runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the 9-6 victory.

"They had some really good freshmen arms out there that were mid to upper 80's that made our guys compete, made them have an approach," said Sul Ross head coach Ely Gallego. "It was a great opportunity for guys to work on different things, make sure we're staying locked in on our approach and having good two-strike approaches."

The Pioneers led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the second.

Tye Lindsey hit an RBI single to center while Peyten Kennard was able to drive in Lindsey on a single to center to tie up the score.

On a first and third situation, the Lobos executed the double steal as Kennard was able to slide safely across home plate to give his team a 3-2 lead.

Tristan Karels extended the score to 5-2 when he belted a two-run homer to right center during the bottom of the third.

Vann Johnson cut the deficit to two runs when he hit a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Adan Escalante in the top of the fourth.

Carsen Thor made the score 6-3 with an RBI single in the bottom half of the fifth.

Sul Ross then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Karels hit an infield RBI-single while Orlando Moreno scored on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder.

Karels finished 2 for 4 with a homer, single and three RBIs. Thor also went 2 for 4 with a single, double and an RBI.

Mateo Saenz hit a single and a double to finish 2 for 4. Aaron Morales tallied a pair of singles to go 2 for 3.

Kennard went 2 for 3 with a single, double and an RBI. Moreno also had a two-hit day with two singles and walk to go 2 for 3.

Chris Ibanez started the game, throwing three innings allowing two earned runs and six hits. The bullpen comprised of Cade Watson, Aidan Mow and Ian Craigie combined to strikeout four batters while allowing two hits.

>> GAME 2:

Wayland Baptist held a 2-0 lead in the top of the first until Thor hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first to plate home Freddy Nunez.

Saenz then hit an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. He later scored on a wild pitch to put the Lobos on top at the end of one inning.

In the bottom of the third, Karels drilled a shot into deep center. He legged it out for an inside-the-park home run to make the score 4-2.

The Pioneers tacked on two runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game.

Staying hot at the plate, Karels hit a two-RBI triple to left center during the bottom of the fourth to put Sul Ross ahead, 6-4.

Wayland Baptist came back to tie the game at 6-6. The Pioneers got an RBI double in the seventh while another run was scored on a passed ball during the top of the sixth.

A crucial throwing error by the Pioneers' third baseman allowed Sul Ross to take the lead back, 8-6, in the bottom of the eighth.

Thor added an insurance run by hitting an RBI double.

Karels went 2 for 2 with the inside-the-park home run, a triple and three RBI. Thor finished 2 for 4 with a single, double and an RBI.

Saenz hit two singles to go 2 for 2 with a walk and an RBI. Lee Kubosh hit a single and a double to finish 2 for 2.

The Lobos had 15 hits.

Brad Ansley started the game, throwing three innings as he tallied three strikeouts and allowed two hits. Dawson Beard fanned five batters in three innings of relief while allowed three hits.

Derek Rojo and Connor Archer tossed the final two innings as the duo allowed one hit.

"Defensively, we still committed one or two errors in a crucial moment that we still got to keep getting better at," Gallego added. "We can't have those errors in those crucial moments.

"The good thing is all those things are fixable. It's nothing to worry about."
