WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos fall short to UT-Dallas

It came down to the wire.

Unfortunately, the Sul Ross State women's basketball team came up short, losing 62-60, to the University of Texas at Dallas Comets on Saturday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

The last three meetings between both teams were barn burners which included two games that were decided in overtime.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lobos led 4-0 in the opening quarter after two free throws by Ariana Escalante and a jumper from Morgan Peralez.

UT-Dallas tied up the game before taking a one-point lead.

Cheyanne Bonilla knocked down a three-pointer to put the Lobos ahead by two and then the Comets got a three of their own to lead by one.

On a layup by Peralez, the Lobos nodded up the score at 10-all with 4:45 on the clock.

The score was tied once more at 12-12 when Marley Rokas landed a jumper.

UT-Dallas hit another three-pointer to lead by three, but the Lobos went on a 5-0 run to lead 17-15 after another clutch three by Bonilla.

The Comets answered back with a three to lead by one.

Victoria Aguayo made a jumper in the paint to tie up the score at 20-all to end the first quarter.

UT-Dallas went on an 8-0 run to begin the second quarter. Sul Ross State answered back with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to two points.

The Comets went ahead by six and then Escalante knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 33-30 at the break.

Sul Ross State trailed by as much as seven in the third quarter until Peralez made a layup to put her team behind by five.

Trailing by eight in the fourth quarter with 5:42 to go, the Lobos fought back as Bonilla hit another three-pointer to cut the deficit to five.

Using a 6-0 run, Sul Ross State trailed by one with 57 seconds to go.

It came down to free throws down the stretch as the Comets were able to knock down key free throws to pull away for the win.

"I think our players were ready to play, and I think we did a lot of great things. We shot a lot of free throws, but we didn't make free throws when we needed them the most. My players fought all the way, they never give up. I need a couple of more players to step up to help our starters here and there. Next game is going to be tough. Nothing is going to be easy. I expect somebody to step up to help their teammates." — Head coach E.J. Lee Smith

>> GAME NOTES:
  • Rokas finished with 18 points, two assists and one steal.
  • Peralez added with 14 points, two blocks and five rebounds.
  • Bonilla chipped in with 11 points, six assists and three rebounds.
  • Escalante and Aguayo each had seven points. The duo combined for seven steals and 14 rebounds.
  • The Lobos grabbed 33 rebounds. Aguayo led the Lobos with eight.
  • Sul Ross State also had 11 steals. Aguayo finished with four.
  • Sul Ross State shot 18 for 25 from the free throw line. Rokas went 11 for 12 from the charity stripe.
  • The Lobos landed six 3-pointers as Bonilla had three.
