On Sunday afternoon, the Sul Ross State men's basketball team hosted Navajo Technical University at the Pete P. Gallego Center for what ended up being a barn burner.
The Lobos managed to pull off an 84-80 win over the Skyhawks to snap the three-game losing skid.
>> HOW IT HAPPENED:
Sul Ross State began the game on a 4-0 run as
Cailean Ables made two free throws and
Bryce Harris landed a layup.
The Lobos went up by five after a three from
Gabe Sanchez.
Navajo Tech cut the deficit to two with a three of its own. The Skyhawks trailed by one point with 15:47 on the clock after hitting another three.
Sanchez answered back with a trey to put the Lobos up by four.
Using a 3-0 run, the Skyhawks later ended up tying the game at 18-all with 11:53 to go.
Hayden Peterson made a jumper in the paint off a dish from
Zyrin Brantley to put the Lobos back on top.
Navajo Tech tied up the score at 20-all at the 9:54 mark.
Myles Amason gave Sul Ross State a two-point lead with a layup. The see-saw then went back to the Skyhawks as they tied up the game once more at 22-all.
The Lobos used a 5-0 run to take a five-point lead with 8:09 on the clock. Brantley had a three-point play during the run after he got fouled on a made layup.
Navajo Tech got to within three before the Lobos put together another 5-0 run that was highlighted by a clutch three from
Jayden Canaba.
Trailing by eight with just under six minutes to go in the half, the Skyhawks came back to tie the score at 34-all.
Navajo Tech took a brief one-point lead until
Larry Morrison made a layup to put the Lobos on top by one at the break.
The Skyhawks turned it up a notch in the second half, going on a 7-0 run to take an eight-point lead.
Navajo Tech led by as much as 11 with 12:06 on the clock.
Behind a 7-0 run, the Lobos got to within two with 7:30 to go.
Manny Flores nailed a clutch three during the run.
The lead changed three times in the final five and a half minutes.
Ultimately, the Lobos made some key stops and made seven free throws down the stretch to break away.

- Sul Ross State got 53 points from its bench and 20 points off turnovers.
- Sanchez continues to lead the Lobos in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game. He also leads the squad with 31 made three-pointers and 56 made field goals.
- Harris is tied for the team lead in rebounds with 56 alongside Tyler Jackson.
- Peterson leads the Lobos with 19 steals while Flores is second with 14.
- Ibarra leads the squad with 29 assists while Brantley has 27.
- Navajo Tech had four players in double digits.
- Navajo Tech, out of Crownpoint, N.M., is not affiliated with the NCAA or NAIA, it is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association which is made up of 72 small colleges.
