WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Lobos fall to UMHB at home

It was going to be a tall task for the Sul Ross State women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as it took on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Lady Crusaders.

The Lobos were up by six in the second quarter before the contest slipped out reach as they suffered a 74-55 loss at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

UMHB began the game on a 6-0 run until the Lobos got four points from Cheyanne Bonilla to the cut deficit.

Bonilla made a layup to end the opening quarter as she scored six points to put her team behind by two.

To start the second quarter, Bonilla tied up the score on a jumper in the paint off an assist by Victoria Aguayo.

The score was tied three times in the second quarter.

Sul Ross State used an 8-0 run to take a six-point lead with 3:46 on the clock. Six of the eight points came off free throws.

Closing out on a 7-0 run, the Lady Crusaders headed into the locker room with a five-point lead.

UMHB led by as much as 14 in the third quarter.

The Lobos got the deficit down to as little as five with 3:59 on the clock as Kayley Diaz hit a shot in the paint.

UMHB went on to outscore the Lobos, 25-18, in the fourth quarter to pull away.

  • Katie Novak-Lenoir returned to Alpine, Texas … She took over the reigns of the UMHB women's basketball program in April of 2023 … She spent five seasons as the head coach at Sul Ross State where she led the Lobos to two American Southwest Conference tournament appearances … She also produced 12 all-conference players including an ASC Player of the Year and two ASC Newcomers of the Year … Novak earned ASC West Division Coach of the Year honors in 2021.
  • Alexis Carmosino, a former two-time All-ASC selection with the Lobos, scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Crusaders.
>> GAME NOTES:
  • Bonilla led the way with 16 points and three assists.
  • Marley Rokas tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Diaz added with nine points, three rebounds and two assists.
  • Emily Bunger finished with six points and five rebounds.
  • Aguayo grabbed six rebounds.
  • The Lobos had 47 rebounds compared to the 60 pulled in by UMHB.
  • Sul Ross State shot 14 for 19 from the charity stripe.
