VOLLEYBALL: Cassandra Espinoza has 10 kills against LeTourneau

LONGVIEW, Texas — The Sul Ross State volleyball team suffered a sweep, 22-25, 18-25, 12-25, to the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets on Friday night at Solheim Arena.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

The opening set featured 11 different lead changes.

Sul Ross State was up 5-3 until LeTourneau tied up the score at six-all.

The Lobos regained the lead at 9-7 after back-to-back kills by Sarah Chavez and Daniella Garcia.

Riding a wave momentum, Sul Ross State led by as much as four points after two kills from Cassandra Espinoza.

LeTourneau used a 4-0 run to tie up the set at 14-all.

The Lobos then took a one-point lead on a kill by Espinoza before LeTourneau regained the lead at 16-15.

As the set went back and forth, the Lobos pulled ahead with a two-point lead at 21-19 after another kill by Daniella Garcia.

The Yellowjackets used a 3-0 run to take a 22-21 lead before the set was tied up at 22-all.

LeTourneau then closed out the set on a 3-0 run to pull away with the win.

Sul Ross State began the second set with a 3-0 run after two service aces by Espinoza and a kill by Daniella Garcia.

There were four different lead changes until the Lobos took a 12-9 lead.

LeTourneau used a 5-1 run to take a one-point lead before Daniella Garcia tied up the score at 14-all with a kill.

Using a 6-0 run, the Yellowjackets were able to gain some breathing room.

LeTourneau led 18-5 in the middle of the third set.

The Lobos got into double digits on the scoreboard when Daniella Garcia put down another kill to trail by 11 points.

LeTourneau closed out the set with a 4-2 run to take the match.

  • Espinoza led the Lobos with 10 kills and two service aces.
  • Espinoza ranks second on the team with 169 kills.
  • Daniella Garcia finished with seven kills to give her a team-leading 185 kills on the season.

  • Paige Champlin finished with two service aces.
  • Eliana Mata had 16 assists and five digs.
  • Tatyana Colon led the defensive effort with nine digs while Loren Garcia had six digs.
