VOLLEYBALL: Lobos put up a fight against Hardin-Simmons

It was a second chance at redemption for the Sul Ross State volleyball team as it took on the Hardin-Simmons University Cowgirls.

The Lobos put up a fight in the third set, but the Cowgirls prevailed with the sweep by the scores of 25-21, 25-20, 32-30, on Friday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

>> HOW IT HAPPENED:

Hardin-Simmons began the first set with a 4-0 run.

The lead grew to nine points before the Lobos went on a late 3-0 run to cut the deficit to three points.

Daniella Garcia hammered down a kill while Tatyana Colon had a service ace during the run.

Unfortunately, the Cowgirls got the set point to go up 1-0.

There were two lead changes early in the second set.

Sul Ross State led 2-0 at the start after another kill from Daniella Garcia. Hardin-Simmons came back to tie things up at two-all.

Aided by kills from Loren Garcia and Daniella Garcia, the Lobos regained the lead at 4-2.

Cassandra Espinoza tallied a kill to keep Sul Ross State on top by two points.

Hardin-Simmons then began to separate itself by going on a 7-0 run to take a 12-7 lead.

The Lobos cut the deficit to three after a kill from Edie Coleman, but the Cowgirls surged ahead with another 7-0 run that made the score 19-9.

Sul Ross State chiseled down the deficit to four with two late kills from Coleman and Jayci Richters, but the Cowgirls held on for the win.

The third set featured 15 different lead changes.

It was a tight start as there were five lead changes until the Cowgirls went on a 5-0 run to take an 11-7 lead.

Sul Ross State then got into a rhythm and went on a 7-0 run of its own to flip the script by taking a 18-14 lead.

The Lobos held a 22-19 lead until the suspense began as Hardin-Simmons used a 3-0 run to tie up the game.

The momentum shifted back and forth.

Hardin-Simmons was a point away from ending the set until the Lobos fought back to lead, 26-25.

The Cowgirls used a 2-0 run to take the lead back before Sul Ross State went on a 2-0 to take a 28-27 lead.

Hardin-Simmons then repeated the process with another 2-0 run before Coleman tallied a kill to tie the score at 29-all.

Trailing by one point, a kill by Loren Garcia tied up the score at 30-all.

Hardin-Simmons then nailed two kills to finish off the match.

  • Daniella Garcia continues to lead the team with 163 kills and 32 blocks.

  • Colon had 10 digs and one service ace.
  • Colon leads the team with 19 service aces while Sweeten has 18.
  • Brylee Sweeten helped the offense with 18 assists.

  • Mata ranks first on the squad with 271 assists.
