It just wasn't in the cards for the Sul Ross State men's basketball team on Thursday night.
The Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys won their second-straight game with a 95-68 victory over the Lobos at the Pete P. Gallego Center.
Sul Ross got off to a 6-0 run fueled by a pair of three-pointers by
Trey Nelson and
Luke Pluymen.
Hardin-Simmons came back to take an 8-6 lead before
Hayden Peterson knocked down a clutch three to give the Lobos back the lead at 9-8.
On a pair of free throws, the Cowboys took a 10-9 lead.
Larry Morrison then made a layup off an assist by Nelson to put Sul Ross ahead, 11-10.
A three from Hardin-Simmons swung the pendulum back in its favor with a 13-11 advantage.
Nelson landed a jumper in the paint to tie the game at 13-all.
Daveone Bass then scored on the fast break to make the score 15-13 in favor of Sul Ross with 13:12 to go.
Hardin-Simmons tied up the game at 15-all and then from that point on it went on a 9-0 run to increase its lead to seven.
The Lobos cut the deficit down to five on two occasions on shots in the paint by Pluymen and
Eli Gonzalez.
Hardin-Simmons then began to run away with the contest by leading by as much as 13 with 51 seconds left until halftime.
Sul Ross was outscored 48-32 in the second half. The Lobos shot 39.1 percent from the field for the game.
Nelson led the way with 18 points, six assists and three steals while Pluymen chipped in with 10 points. Nelson and Pluymen combined to make five 3-pointers.
Christian Nevarez,
Gabe Sanchez, Gonzalez and
Vince Peralez each made six points.
Hardin-Simmons won the battle on the glass by grabbing 41 rebounds to the 38 for the Lobos. Sul Ross also shot 11 for 21 from the free throw line.
Nevarez grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while Peterson added with five points and five boards.
