It was an opportunity for the Sul Ross State women's basketball team to break a three-way tie for third place in the American Southwest Conference standings.
Tied with the University of Texas at Dallas, the Lobos gave it their all but suffered an 86-80 overtime loss Thursday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center.
The Comets avenged a seven-point loss to Sul Ross suffered back on Dec. 3, which snapped a 15-game winning streak against the Lobos.
UT-Dallas started the game on a 6-0 run until
Brianna Martin made a free throw with 6:29 on the clock to end the run.
Sul Ross trailed by as much as nine in the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, the script was flipped as the Lobos outscored the Comets, 20-7. On a three-pointer by
Melody Martinez, Sul Ross was able to tie the game at 21-all with 8:22 on the clock.
Martin then landed a three-pointer while
Jocelyne Roque made a layup to put the Lobos ahead by five.
Marley Rokas extended the lead to eight by making a clutch three-pointer with 5:05 remaining.
UT-Dallas chiseled down the deficit to two points before
Emily Bunger landed a jumper to put the Lobos ahead by four at the break.
After two free throws and a layup by
Vania Hampton, Sul Ross held a 37-32 lead with 5:55 in the third quarter.
Sul Ross grew its lead to eight after a jumper by
Kayley Diaz and another three from Rokas. Bunger then followed up with another layup to put the Lobos up by 10 with 4:31 to go in the third frame.
The Lobo lead was cut in half with 44 seconds to go.
Victoria Aguayo made two free throws before the end of the quarter to put Sul Ross on top by seven.
In the final quarter, the Lobos led by as much as eight on two different occasions before the Comets rallied back to tie the game at 61-all with 4:46 left in regulation.
UT-Dallas raced to a six-point lead with 3:03 on the clock.
Rokas hit another clutch three while Diaz made a jumper in the paint to put Sul Ross behind by one with 2:27 to go.
Hampton gave the Lobos a one-point lead after making a pair of free throws. The Comets answered back in the form of a layup to take the lead back by one.
Martin made a pair of free throws to put the Lobos back out in front by one with 1:11 to go.
As if on cue, Rokas knocked down another three-pointer to make the score 72-69 with just 38 seconds on the clock.
UT-Dallas retaliated with another three to tie up the game at 72-all.
The Comets outscored Sul Ross, 14-8, during the overtime period to walk away with the victory, handing the Lobos their first loss at home.
UT-Dallas also snapped the Lobos' four-game winning streak.
Rokas led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Diaz also tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists.
Bunger added another double-double performance with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Hampton chipped in with 10 points.
The Lobos matched UT-Dallas by grabbing 47 rebounds. Sul Ross got 34 points from its bench.
