Lobos make quick work of Howard Payne with straight-set sweep

Sul Ross wins two in a row; Griner leads the way with 12 kills

BROWNWOOD — On Tuesday night, the Sul Ross State volleyball team made quick work of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets with a straight-set sweep, 25-21, 25-19, 25-16, at the Brownwood Coliseum.

The Lobos extended their winning streak to two.

Howard Payne began the first set with a 3-1 lead before Victoria Flores tallied a kill to cut the deficit to one.

The Yellow Jackets later took back the lead until Loren Garcia tied up the score at 10-10 with a kill to start a 5-0 run for the Lobos.

Daniella Garcia came up with a kill while Tatyana Colon served up an ace during the big rally.

Sul Ross led 18-13 in the middle of the game.

Annika Canaba had a clutch kill and Colon added with another service ace to help Sul Ross close out Howard Payne by four points.

To start the second set, the score was tight before the Yellow Jackets took an 11-8 lead. Sul Ross rallied back to take a 13-12 lead.

The Lobos put together a 4-0 run fueled by two kills from Taryn Griner and a kill from Flores to make the score 19-16.

Howard Payne fought back to tie the score at 19-all.

Sul Ross fired off a 6-0 run that was highlighted by two service aces by Kamrynn Caruth and a pair of kills from Garcia and Canaba.

Holding a 2-0 lead in the match, the Lobos kept surging forward by beginning the final set with a 5-1 lead.

A kill by Garcia later made the score 14-6.

The lead for the Lobos grew to nine in the middle of the set. Griner sealed the deal with two kills to earn Sul Ross the sweep.

Griner led the offense with 12 kills and three block assists while Canaba tallied 11 kills, 19 assists and four digs.

Caruth added with 18 assists and three service aces. Garcia finished with eight kills.
