CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Sul Ross State volleyball team went to work at the Pacific Coast Classic for Day 1 of competition on Friday night at the Linde Activities Center.

The Lobos came out the first set with a 6-1 lead after a kill by
Annika Canaba. Sul Ross led 16-3 at one point before taking the opening set 25-10 after ending on a 5-0 run.
Sul Ross showed its dominance in the second set, taking an early 10-2 lead after kills from Canaba and
Cassandra Espinoza.
The Lobos led by 15 late in the set to eventually take the game 25-10.
In the final set, Sul Ross trailed 2-0 early on. The Lobos endured five ties in the score before pulling away for the 25-16 victory to take the match in straight sets.
Taryn Griner led the Lobos with nine kills while Canaba and Espinoza chipped in with eight kills each.
Victoria Flores added with six kills.
Canaba also finished with five service aces.
Kamrynn Caruth aided the offense with 17 assists while Canaba had eight and
Faith Herrera tallied five.
Defensively,
Tatyana Colon recorded 14 digs.

It was a close opening set until Pomona-Pitzer went on a 6-0 run to separate itself to take the victory 25-16.
Sul Ross had to battle back in the second game after it trailed 3-0 at the start. The Lobos took advantage of an attack error to lead 7-5.
The set was back and forth down the stretch, but Pomona-Pitzer edged out the Lobos by four to take the set 25-21.
In a hole, trailing two sets, the Lobos trailed 21-17 late in the third set.
Sul Ross used a 4-0 run to turn the tide of the game by taking a 25-24 lead. The Lobos capitalized on two attacking errors and a pair of kills from Canaba and
Daniella Garcia.
Pomona-Pitzer came back to deadlock the set at 25-all.
The Lobos fought back, in heart-pounding fashion, to win 27-25. Garcia and Griner rallied the Lobos with two kills down the stretch.
The fourth set was a thriller.
Sul Ross led 20-15 after a kill by Caruth in the middle of the set.
Pomona-Pitzer used an 8-0 run to flip the script, taking a 24-22 lead. Sul Ross cut the deficit to within one on another kill by Caruth, but it came up short, losing 25-23.
Canaba led the Lobos with 15 kills while Griner added with 14. Garcia had six kills.
Caruth tallied 28 assists and two kills while leading the defensive effort with 21 digs. Colon and Herrera recorded 14 digs apiece.
