JACKSON, Miss. — It was a valiant effort by the Sul Ross State women's soccer team during their season opener Thursday evening against the Belhaven Blazers.
The Lobos controlled the possession in the first half, tallying eight shots in the opening period.
There were plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net, but Sul Ross couldn't finish its chances.
Hayley Ruckle gave the Blazers a 1-0 lead with 37 minutes in the first half.
The score remained the same as the match entered halftime.
Momentum shifted over to Belhaven as it answered with two goals in the second half from Emma Antonoplos (45') and Kyla Shaw (50').
Sul Ross erased the shutout after
Yissel Olivares scored off a header to make the score 3-1 in the 73rd minute.
The Lobos narrowly out shot Belhaven 11-12. Sul Ross had six shots on the mark.
Deserie Hererra had three shots, with two coming at the goal.
