ABILENE — The Sul Ross State volleyball team dropped another tough loss on the road in Abilene.
On Saturday, the Lobos fell to Hardin-Simmons in four sets, 25-20, 8-25, 14-25, 11-25, at the Mabee Complex.
Sul Ross played a solid opening set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead.
After a service ace by
Annika Canaba, the Lobos held an 8-5 lead. Hardin-Simmons cut the lead to one, but Sul Ross went off on a 5-0 run.
Taryn Griner had two clutch kills while
Cassandra Espinoza tallied one kill during the rally to make the score 13-7.
Sul Ross led by as much as seven in the middle of the set.
Hardin-Simmons trailed by three late in the game, but Canaba nailed two straight kills to give her team the victory in the first set.
In the second set, Hardin-Simmons showed its dominance by going on a 13-0 to close out the set with a 25-8 win.
The Cowboys began the third set with a 7-0 run before
Victoria Flores ended the streak with a kill.
Hardin-Simmons was too much for the Lobos as it led 17-7 to eventually take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the final set, Hardin-Simmons led 11-4 before the Lobos went on a 4-0 run. Another 7-0 run by the Cowboys helped them solidify the victory.
Griner led the Lobos with nine kills while Canaba added with eight. Flores chipped in with six kills.
Kamrynn Caruth had 15 assists while Canaba tallied 12. Caruth also led the defensive effort with 13 digs while
Tatyana Colon had 12.
