Harmening hired as football Chief of Staff, Scouting

The Sul Ross State University football program has announced the hire of Kurt Harmening as Chief of Staff/Scouting.

Prior to Sul Ross, Harmening served as Director of Player Personnel at Division 1 Valparaiso University in Indiana from January 2020 through early June 2022. Preceding his time at Valpo, he was the Talent/Tactical Scout at Illinois College.

Before entering coaching, Harmening spent eight years in property/casualty insurance claims for multiple Fortune 500 insurance carriers. However, critical health issues took precedent and after a nearly four-year battle with kidney failure, followed by a life-saving transplant, Harmening decided to pursue his dream of becoming a football scout with an eye on roster architecture.

Harmening received a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in psychology from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. He is a native of Windsor Locks, Conn.

Kurt and his wife, Sarah, a disability claims professional, will relocated from La Porte, Indiana. They have one son, Kortland, 7.
