ABILENE, Texas - Baseball concluded their season on the road this weekend against Hardin-Simmons. The Lobos fell 12-9 on Friday before splitting Saturday's doubleheader with a 5-4 loss and 16-4 win.
Game 1: Hardin-Simmons 12, Sul Ross 9
Carsen Thor started things off for Sully with a double to right field that brought in
Orlando Moreno for a 1-0 lead.
Hardin-Simmons answered with four in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead.
Jorge Marquez and
Estevan Ortiz scored on an error to cut the Cowboy lead to 4-3 going bottom two.
Hardin-Simmons again answered, scoring three in the second to extend their lead to 7-3.
Peyten Kennard grounded into a fielder's choice that plated
Jared Lorenz to cut it to 7-4 in the fourth.
The Cowboys scored two in the third, one in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 12-4 lead going to the seventh.
Marquez scored on an error to start the eighth inning rally.
Tye Lindsey then drew a walk that brought in
Tristan Karels. Another Cowboy error allowed
Jared Roiz to reach base and bring in Thor. Kennard was then hit by a pitch to bring in Lorenz and cap off the four-run inning and cut it to 12-8.
Ortiz, Moreno and Thor all singled in the ninth to load the bases with one out. Lorenz reached base on an error which scored Ortiz and bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but a double play ended the rally in a 12-9 final
Ian Craigie and
Chris Ibanez combined for the final six innings in relief, allowing one earned run.
Thor led the game with four hits and Lindsey had a game-high four walks.
Game 2: Hardin-Simmons 5, Sul Ross 4 (7 innings)
The Cowboys got out to a quick start with three in the bottom of the first.
Ortiz put Sully on the board with a walk to bring in Lindsey. Roiz then walked to plate Marquez for a 3-2 score.
Hardin-Simmons scored on in the third and fourth to extend their lead to 5-2 after four.
Still 5-2 in the sixth, Roiz hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Kennard.
Lindsey sacrifice bunter home Thor to make it 5-4. Lorenz also attempted to come home on the play but was called out at home for the final out.
Aiden Becker started and went four innings with two strikeouts.
Aidan Mow pitched a hitless final two innings.
Game 3: Sul Ross 16, Hardin-Simmons 4 (8 innings)
Sully used the momentum from the end of the game one to jump out to a big 5-0 lead in the first. Lindsey started with a single to left that brought in Karels. A Kennard single kept the Lobo offense hot and scored Thor and Lindsey. Marquez also scored on the play because of an error. Ortiz then singled home Kennard for a 5-0 lead that went all the way to the fifth.
Still 5-0, Lindsey doubled around Thor for a 6-0 lead going bottom five.
Hardin-Simmons got two back for a 6-2 score after five.
Kennard continued his hot day in the seventh with a double to bring in Lorenz, Lindsey and Marquez. Kennard later stole home on a double steal to extend the lead to 10-2. Moreno kept the bats on fire with a single to bring in Ortiz and give Sully an 11-2 lead after seven.
With bases loaded in the eighth, Sully found more insurance runs. Ortiz tripled down the first base line to score Lindsey, Marquez and Kennard. Moreno later singled to bring in Ortiz. Thor finished the five-run inning with a fielder's choice to plate
Kevin Potts to give Sully a 16-2 lead.
The Cowboys scored two in the bottom of the eighth but came no closer in the 16-4 final.
Jacob Salinas went five innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out three.
Isaac Gallego went the final three innings to notch the save.
Kennard finished led the game with three hits, three runs and five RBI. Moreno also had three hits.
Lindsey and Marquez each scored three runs.
The Lobos finish the season 14-22 (11-19 ASC). Hardin-Simmons goes 21-19 (14-16).
