Lobos take game two in extras to split Friday doubleheader with UT Dallas

RICHARDSON, Texas - After falling in game one, softball rallied late and took game two in extras to split with UT Dallas.

"We fought for everything tonight and our bats came alive at the right time," said head coach Troy Canaba. Jodie and Danielle kept us in the game on the mound."

Game 1: UT Dallas 5, Sul Ross 1
A sacrifice fly from Annika Canaba scored Camryn Hardin to give the Lobos an early 1-0 lead after one.

UT Dallas took the lead back with two in the third. They went on to score two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth for 5-1 advantage that went final.

Jodie Vaughn was in the circle for the series opener. She went all six innings with four strikeouts.

Game 2: Sul Ross 5, UT Dallas 2 (8 innings)
Nadia Valverde broke a scoreless tie in the third with a single to plate Hardin for a 1-0 lead.

The Comets answered in the fourth to even things up at 1-1.

UT Dallas took the lead in the sixth with one to put them ahead 2-1.

Veronica Rodriguez launched a solo home run to even things up at 2-2 and force extras.

Samantha Chavez walked to get the go-ahead run on base to start the eighth. Canaba capitalized by hitting a home run to left to give Sully a 4-2 advantage. Sims soon tacked on an insurance run with a solo shot to left center for a 5-2 score.

Jodie Vaughn entered for starter Danielle Gomez after she went 6.2 innings. Vaughn shut down the Comets in the eighth for her seventh win of the season in the 5-2 win.

Gomez allowed two runs with three strikeouts.

Canaba, Valverde and Sims each matched a game-high two hits. Canaba led the game with two RBI.

With the split, the Lobos move to 13-14 (6-11 ASC). The Comets stand at 17-10 (9-8 ASC).

The Lobos return to action Saturday against UTD at 12:00 p.m. in Richardson.
