TUCSON, Arizona - Softball fell 4-3 to Baldwin Wallace before rallying for a 6-4 win over Buena Vista to split their final day at the Tucson Invitational.
"It was a great tournament and I'm very happy with our overall performance," said head coach
Troy Canaba. "We still need to clean up some areas, but I'm very proud of the team."
Game 1: Baldwin Wallace 4, Sul Ross 3
Scoreless after two innings, Baldwin Wallace brought in three in the bottom of the third for a 3-0 lead.
It remained 3-0 until
Raquelle Bernal singled in
Veronica Rodriguez to cut it to two.
Nadia Valverde later stepped in and doubled home Bernal and
Annika Canaba for a 3-3 tie.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead again in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the 4-3 win.
Danielle Gomez went all six innings on the mound with four strikeouts
Game 2: Sul Ross 6, Buena Vista 4
The Beavers quickly took control with four in the top of the first.
The next two half-innings were scoreless before the Lobos got the offense going.
Veronica Rodriguez plated Sully's first runs with a double to score Gomez and
Heather Rios.
Camryn Hardin later brought home Rodriguez on a groundout to third to cut it to one. Bernal then scored on a throwing error to tie it before another error scored
Samantha Chavez and Canaba for a 6-4 advantage after two.
Hunter Montes took command from there, throwing all seven innings. She gave up just two earned runs with four strikeouts in the 6-4 win.
With the split, the Lobos move to 11-8 on the season and remain 4-5 in conference.
Sully gets back to conference play next Friday against Belhaven in Jackson, MS.
