ALPINE, Texas - Baseball resumed conference play on Friday, falling 9-6 and 23-11 to Belhaven at Kokernot Field.
Game 1: Belhaven 9, Sul Ross 6 (7 innings)
Belhaven got out to a quick 1-0 advantage after one.
Sul Ross didn't wait long to find an answer.
Orlando Moreno singled home
Carsen Thor and
Tye Lindsey for the lead.
Jared Roiz later singled around
Matthew Wheeler to make it 3-1after two.
The Blazers outscored the Lobos 8-0 over the next 4.5 innings to take a 9-3 lead going bottom seven.
Sully didn't go down without a fight. Lindsey singled in
Estevan Ortiz to make it 9-4. Thor kept things going with a 2-RBI double to score
Jared Lorenz and
Tristan Karels, cutting the deficit to 9-6, but that's as close as the Lobos would get in a 9-6 final.
Lindsey finished with a game-high three hits. Roiz, Lorenz and Thor each had two.
Sam Russell was the starter, going four innings with three earned runs on four hits and two strikeouts.
Game 2: Belhaven 23, Sul Ross 11
The Blazers started quick with five runs in the top of the fifth.
Jorge Marquez provided a spark on the offensive end with a single to bring in Karels for a 5-1 score after one.
It remained 5-1 going to the fourth until Belhaven added three for an 8-1 advantage.
Ortiz plated Thor on a single to cut it to 8-2 after four.
Belhaven added the next 15 rover the next three innings giving them a 23-2 advantage.
Ortiz launched a two-run shot to left, bringing in Moreno to make it 23-4 after seven
Sully again continued to battle. Thor drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to score Lorenz and make it 23-5. Wheeler then launched a 3-RBI double to score
Cameron Tobola,
Kevin Potts and Thor to cut the Blazer lead to 23-8. Moreno then doubled to bring in Wheeler. Moreno then scored on a throwing error. Ortiz later scored another error for a 23-11 lead that soon went final.
Sul Ross moves to 10-7 (7-4 ASC). Belhaven goes to 9-8 (9-5 ASC).
The Lobos look to avoid the sweep on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. from Kokernot Field.
