ALPINE, Texas - Trailing by 14 early in the fourth, women's hoops outscored the #16 East Texas Baptist Tigers, 29-11, for a 77-73 triumph at the Gallego Center.
The win snaps an eight-game regular season losing streak to the Tigers.
"Today was an exciting game until the end," said head coach
Katie Novak. "We did a great job of staying together and focused no matter what the score was. It was a great team effort against a tough, sharpshooting ETBU. I'm very proud of each player for believing in themselves and one another."
First Quarter
The Lobos got off to a quick start, getting back-to-back triples from
Vania Hampton and
Keona Loftis for a 6-0 lead. After an ETBU jumper,
Marley Rokas and
Caitlyn Corley scored six and three respectively for a 9-0 run and 15-2 advantage. The Lobos saw their lead cut to five with a 12-5 answer but went to the second ahead 21-14 after
Cassie Hogan sank a pair of free throws late in the first.
Second Quarter
Sully answered a Tiger three-pointer with three each from Rokas and Hampton to lead 27-17. The Lobos continued to hold a lead until ETBU took their first of the game, 36-35, with just under a minute left.
Teresa Quintana made a late free throw for a 36-36 tie that went to the half.
Third Quarter
The Tigers opened the second half with the first five to go ahead 41-36. They continued to lead and upped it to 49-38 midway through the third. Their largest advantage of the third came at 53-40 before Hogan and
Alexis Carmosino each scored three to cut it to 53-46 with just over two minutes left. ETBU later finished the third with the final four for a 59-48 lead heading to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
It became a 14-point lead with a three from the Tigers to open the fourth, but Sully would not back down. After a pair of Rokas free throws, Quintana drained a triple before Hogan made a layup. Carmosino then hit a pair of free throws to make it 62-57 with 7:09 left. Now down seven, Quintana hit another triple before Rokas and Carmosino made back-to-back layups to tie it 64-64 with just over six minutes left. The Tigers again went ahead by three, but Quintana was fouled on a three and made all of her free throws for a 67-67 tie with 4:03 remaining. Hogan and Quintana later hit back-to-back triples for a 73-69 lead around the two-minute mark. ETBU came back with the next four before Carmosino hit the shot of the game, a triple from the left wing with 18.5 seconds left for a 76-73 advantage. Rokas later went to the line up three and cemented the game with a free throw for a 77-73 win.
Stats
Rokas scored a game-high 19 points with nine rebounds and two steals. She shot 5-of-10 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
Carmosino led the team with 10 rebounds and scored 14 points.
Both Hogan and Quintana added 13 points and three rebounds.
The Lobos shot 8-of-11 (72.7%) and 5-of-7 (71.4%) from three in the final quarter. They held the Tigers to 6-of-21 (28.6%) in the fourth.
Sully improves to 12-9, 8-8 in conference, and are winners of four straight. The Tigers fall to 15-4 and 11-3.
The Lobos remain at home next week, battling Concordia on Thursday, February 10.
