ALPINE, Texas - Women's hoops turned a close contest with Concordia into a 66-51 win after a 23-11 final quarter on Thursday night at the Gallego Center.
"It took a little while tonight to get going, but we found a way to get back on track," said head coach
Katie Novak. "Not every game will be pretty, but the important thing is that we are still building together and finding ways to bounce back."
First Quarter
Marley Rokas opened scoring nearly three minutes in with a triple.
Caitlyn Corley later mimicked Rokas with a triple before Rokas added a layup for an 8-2 lead. Sully continued to hold the advantage through the first, finishing with five of the final seven points on two free throws from
Alexis Carmosino and a
Cassie Hogan triple for a 18-12 lead after one.
Second Quarter
The Lobos upped their advantage to eight with four in a row from Hogan to lead 24-16. Concordia answered with the next eight for a tie near the midway point of the half, but
Vania Hampton had a 4-0 response of her own for a 28-24 advantage. Ahead 28-26 with 4:23 left,
Alyssa Ramlochan and Hampton made back-to-back layups before
Kayla James added a pair from the line for a 34-26 lead with 1:00 left. The Tornados scored the final point of the half for a 34-27 Sully lead at the break.
Third Quarter
Teresa Quintana and Carmosino started the third by making it a 10-point lead from the free throw line. Their second 10-point lead of the third came on a Hampton layup for a 41-31 score. The Tornados made it a close game heading to the fourth, trailing 43-40 heading to the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Concordia opened the fourth with a triple for a 43-43 tie.
Keona Loftis returned the favor with a triple the next time down the floor to start an 8-0 run. Hampton followed with a layup before Carmosino's layup and free throw after the foul made it 51-43 with 7:42 left. Hampton and Ramlochan teamed up for back-to-back layups one more time for a 66-50 lead, their largest of the game, with just over a minute left. That's all the Lobos needed, surrendering just one more point the rest of the way in a 66-51 win.
Stats
Hampton led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. She added four rebounds and three steals.
Carmosino came down with a game-high 13 rebounds, adding 16 points and three steals.
James led the game with five assists and tied a game-high five steals.
The Lobos are winners of their last five. They stand at 13-9 on the season and 9-8 in conference play. Concordia dips to 7-15 and 5-12.

Katie Novak became the single-season conference wins leader in program history with nine.
Sully finishes the home portion of their season on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
