Lobos finish series with 5-1 win over LETU

By Justin Corbett and Derek Pollacchi

LONGVIEW, Texas - Softball picked up a 5-1 win today over LETU, avoiding a series sweep.

"We didn't play well yesterday and LETU came out hot," said head coach Troy Canaba. "We regrouped last night at our team meeting. We just wanted to focus on little things and we did that today."

Game 1: LETU 8, Sul Ross 1
LETU opened up scoring with three runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

A Samantha Chavez single brought in Veronica Rodriguez to make it 3-1 in their half of the fifth.

The Yellowjackets added another three to end the fifth and added two more in the sixth to give them an 8-1 lead that went final.

Payslee Sims finished with a team-high two hits.

Game 2: LETU 13, Sul Ross 5 (5 innings)
After a four-run first inning for the Yellowjackets, Sully responded with a four in the top of the second. Camryn Hardin got the rally started for the Lobos with a two-RBI single to plate Heather Rios and Sims. Chavez then doubled home Raquelle Bernal and Hardin to even things up at 4-4 after two.

Rios kept the Lobos hot with a single to center field that brought in Cayman Ivins to give the Lobos a 5-4 advantage after the top of the third.

LETU responded with two runs in the third to retake the lead at 6-5. They went on to add four in the fourth and three in the fifth to win it 13-5 in five innings.

Chavez and Sims finished with a pair of hits each.

Game 3: Sul Ross 5, LETU 1
Annika Canaba got things going in the top of the first with a single to score Hardin to start a four-run inning. Sims later singled home Canaba. Vaughn grounded out to second, scoring Nadia Valverde before Rios singled in Sims for a 4-0 lead.

LETU came back with one in the third, but that was the only run Vaughn would surrender in the outing.

Vaughn also provided the final run of the game on a single to score Canaba in the fifth.

The righty went all seven innings, surrendering one unearned run. She gave up four hits and had three strikeouts.

Canaba finished with game-highs of three hits and two runs scored.

The Lobos now stand at 7-6 and 4-5 in conference. LETU moves to 4-6 and 2-4.
