Stout pitching and defense leads Lobos to Sunday sweep of Trinity

By Justin Corbett

ALPINE, Texas - Softball took a break from conference play, sweeping Trinity by scores of 3-1 and 1-0 at Lobo Field on Sunday.

"We are making great strides," said head coach Troy Canaba. "We have done some really good things and we need to clean up some other stuff. I love this team, it's a fun group."

Game 1: Sul Ross 3, Trinity 1
A 0-0 tie was broken in the third inning when Annika Canaba got things going with a single. A throwing error on the single advanced Canaba to second base and scored Camryn Hardin to give the Lobos a 1-0 lead. Canaba then stole third before Nadia Valverde walked. Jenna Spencer ran for Valverde was caught stealing second, but Canaba scored from third on the throw for a 2-0 Lobo lead after three.

Still 2-0 going bottom five, Samantha Chavez used a sacrifice fly to score Raquelle Bernal, giving Sully a 3-0 advantage after five.

Trinity was able to get a run back in the sixth to make it 3-1, but that was as close as the Tigers would get the rest of the way.

Jodie Vaughn was again dominant on the bump, going all seven innings with six strikeouts and allowing one earned run.

Game 2: Sul Ross 1, Trinity 0
A fielding error by the Tigers scored Kendra Serrano to score giving Sully the lone run of the game in the fourth inning.

Danielle Gomez was the game two starter. She went 6.2 innings, allowing only three hits while striking out two. Vaughn earned her second save of the season after relieving Gomez for the final out.

With the sweep, Sully improves to 6-4 (3-3 ASC). Trinity falls to 0-8 (0-0 SCAC).

The Lobos return to action and ASC play with a doubleheader on Friday, February 25 against LeTourneau in Longview.
