ALPINE, Texas - Softball erased a pair of early deficits for a 7-5 win over Concordia in Saturday's rubber match.
"It was a great win," said head coach
Troy Canaba. "I love the way the team fought hard all weekend."
After a scoreless first, Concordia put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the second.
Veronica Rodriguez plated
Nadia Valverde on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning to cut it to one.
Raquelle Bernal then stepped in and singled home
Payslee Sims for a 2-2 tie.
Samantha Chavez later walked home
Heather Rios for a 3-2 advantage after the second.
The Tornados again took the lead with two more in the top of the third.
Sims doubled home Valverde in the third to tie it before Rios later singled in
Kendra Serrano for a 5-4 lead.
Camryn Hardin padded the slim lead with a single to right field to score Rios for a 6-4 advantage after five.
Concordia cut it to one in the top of the sixth but fell behind by two after
Annika Canaba scored on an error for a 7-5 lead going to the seventh.
Jodie Vaughn took the mound for the seventh looking for the complete game. In a bases-loaded jam and one out, she was able to get a strikeout and then a flyout to Rios for the 7-5 win.
Rios led the game with three hits and two runs scored.
Valverde, Sims and Bernal each finished with two hits.
Vaughn moves to 2-2 on the season after seven innings and three strikeouts.
The Lobos improve to 4-4 on the season and 3-3 in the ASC. Concordia falls to 7-4 and 4-2.
Sully next hosts Trinity for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 20.
