Lobos open season, split doubleheader with McMurry

By Justin Corbett

ABILENE, Texas - Softball opened their regular season and ASC play on Friday with a doubleheader split against McMurry.

"This group has a lot of potential," said head coach Troy Canaba. "I'm very proud of how we bounced back from game one. We need to get more confidence at the plate and work on our pitch selection. It's still early in the season and we have a lot of room to grow."

Game 1: Sul Ross 2, McMurry 4
The bats came out early for Sul Ross, as Nadia Valverde doubled to left center to bring in Samantha Chavez in the top of the 1st inning.

Grace Duecker evened things up for the War Hawks at 1-1 with a bunt single to bring in Mercedes Camacho in the bottom of the third.

In the fourth, Kate Casey added a single to bring in Sydney King to make it a 2-1 advantage for McMurry.

Kasey Woolard notched a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-1.

The Lobos did not go down without a fight however. Sully had its first two batters reach base to begin the seventh inning. Veronica Rodriguez reached on hit by a pitch before Taryn Griner added a pinch-hit single. Camryn Hardin grounded out to third base but was able to move both runners up in the process. Danielle Gomez recorded a sacrifice fly to plate Rodriguez to bring it to 4-2. Annika Canaba rallied off a series of foul balls before eventually being retired with a flyout to right field.

Jodie Vaughn got the opening day start and went the distance. She pitched six innings with four earned runs, four hits and eight strikeouts.

Game 2: Sul Ross 2, McMurry 0
Danielle Gomez opened up scoring in the top of the second with a single to right field to plate Valverde. Still in the second, the Lobos quickly built on their early 1-0 lead by capitalizing on a throwing error to score Heather Rios.

Gomez also started on the mound and notched a complete-game shutout with two strikeouts.

Following the split, the Lobos sit at 1-1 (1-1 ASC). McMurry suffers their first loss of the year and dips to 3-1 (1-1 ASC).

The Lobos return to action looking to win the series on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in Abilene.
