RICHARDSON — The Sul Ross men's basketball team found itself in a hole early in the contest.
The Lobos trailed by 19 in the second half before fighting back, unfortunately, the University of Texas at Dallas came away with the 74-66 victory at the UTD Activity Center on Saturday evening.
UT-Dallas started off the game on a 14-0 run before the Lobos ended the scoring drought with a layup by
Caelyb Kerley with 12:47 on the clock.
The Comets then used a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 21-2 with 11:14 left to go.
Vince Peralez ended the run two minutes later with a layup.
UT-Dallas led by as much as 21 in the first half.
Larry Morrison came away with a layup with 22 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 15 at the half.
After two 3-pointers from
Hayden Peterson and
Trey Nelson, Sul Ross trailed by 12 points at the 18-minute mark.
Sul Ross trailed by 14 before making its way back with 3:41 left in the contest when Nelson landed a three-pointer.
Kerley then scored five quick points in the form of a three-pointer and a layup to put the Lobos behind by six points.
With 59 seconds to go in the game, Kerley hit another shot from beyond the arc to chisel the deficit down to five.
But time wasn't on the Lobos' side again.
Nelson tallied 20 points while Kerley finished with 14 points and five rebounds.
Julian Paredes chipped in with 10 points, four steals and seven rebounds.
The Comets won the battle on the boards by grabbing 55 rebounds to the 28 for Sul Ross.
Sul Ross shot 12 for 18 from the free throw line while it went 10 for 30 from beyond the arc. Nelson landed three shots from three-point range.
