MEN'S BASKETBALL: Angelo State uses second half push to defeat Sul Ross during exhibition game

Julian Paredes lands seven 3-pointers to finish with 21 points

SAN ANGELO — It was one final tune up for the Sul Ross State men's basketball team before American Southwest Conference play begins next week.

The Lobos played a competitive first half against Division II Angelo State, but the Rams outscored Sul Ross, 46-17, in the second half to win, 75-53, Saturday night at the Junell Center / Stephens Arena.

Sul Ross trailed 6-0 early on before Trey Nelson hit a three-pointer and Christian Nevarez landed a layup to cut the deficit to one.

Nevarez followed up with a three to give the Lobos the lead with 14:41 on the clock.

The score was tied twice more until Julian Paredes hit a shot from beyond the arc to put Sul Ross back on top, 18-15.

Angelo State went back on top, 19-18, with 8:35 remaining.

Nevarez had the go-ahead layup, but then the Rams went on a 4-0 run to reclaim the lead with 6:45 left to go.

Another clutch three by Paredes put the Lobos ahead by one before Angelo State tied up the game.

Sul Ross later put together a 5-0 run highlighted by another three by Paredes to take a 30-25 lead.

Paredes dealt the hot hand, landing two more 3-pointers down the stretch to increase the Lobos' lead to nine with 2:41 left until halftime.

The Lobos held a seven-point lead at the break.

Angelo State then gained all the momentum in the second half, racing forward to an 11-point lead with 6:51 left in the game.

Paredes led Sul Ross with 21 points, four steals and seven 3-pointers while Nelson finished with nine points and five assists.

Nevarez added with seven points and Daveone Bass chipped in with six.
