COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The 2022-23 Sul Ross State women's basketball season is officially underway.
On Friday night, the Lobos opened up their season against the Emory University Eagles at the Colorado College Classic at Reid Arena.
The Eagles led 26-8 in the opening quarter to take the victory, 90-64.
Emory began the game on a 16-0 run until Marley Rokas scored the first two points of the season with a pair of free throws with 5:41 remaining.
Alexis Carmosino then made a jumper off the fast break to cut the deficit to 12.
Both offenses didn't score for nearly two and a half minutes until the Eagles broke the drought with a jumper to make the score 21-6 with 2:35 on the clock.
The Eagles had a 7-0 run to start the second quarter to increase their lead to 27.
Vania Hampton scored with a layup to end the run with 7:28.
Melody Martinez then tallied six quick points after making a layup, one free throw and a three-pointer that came off an assist by Emily Bunger.
Martinez struck another shot from beyond the arc with 3:27 to go until halftime as the Lobos trailed 45-20.
Sul Ross trailed by 28 at the half.
The Lobos chiseled down the deficit during the third quarter when Bunger, Lauren Lusk and Martinez each scored with a trio of layups.
Sul Ross got to within 22 after Victoria Aguayo made a layup with 2:27 left to go in the frame.
During the fourth quarter, the Lobos kept fighting as they trailed by 19 after a jumper by Carmosino and a pair of free throws were made by Lusk with 7:37 on the clock.
Emory responded with a 7-0 run to lead by 26.
Martinez led Sul Ross with 19 points, one assist and six rebounds while Carmosino added with 12 points, three steals, one assist and six boards.
Lusk chipped in with eight points while grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Hampton finished with five points.
The Lobos narrowly out rebounded the Eagles, 47-46. Sul Ross shot 83.3 percent from the free throw line (20 of 24). Carmosino was a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe.
