COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — First-year head coach E.J. Lee Smith picked up her first win at the helm of the Sul Ross State women's basketball program.
The Lobos defeated the Concordia University Chicago Cougars, 85-83, to wrap up the Colorado College Classic at Reid Arena on Saturday afternoon.
"Our players played hard and together all the way," said Smith. "I am very proud of each and every one of them."
Sul Ross started off with a dominating 15-0 run. Marley Rokas contributed with 10 points during the big run.
The Cougars cut the deficit to five with a pair of three-pointers to highlight a 10-0 run.
Another three-pointer from Concordia chiseled down the Lobos' lead to two. Rokas later made the score 17-13 after making a pair of free throws.
Concordia answered back with another three-pointer to trail by one with 3:25 in the first quarter.
Kayley Diaz made one free throw and scored on a layup to increase the Lobos' lead to four points.
The Lobos had a six-point lead after a layup by Melody Martinez with 7:36 in the second frame.
Concordia later gained a one-point lead by fighting back.
Hot from beyond the arc, the Cougars used another three-pointer to take a 34-32 lead with 3:42 remaining until halftime.
Sul Ross regained the lead when Alexis Carmosino broke a 37-37 tie.
The momentum shifted back to the Cougars as they tied up the game at 42-all at halftime.
Early in the second quarter, Sul Ross broke a 44-44 tie with a jumper by Emily Bunger. The Lobos increased their lead to six when Brianna Martin scored on a layup off an assist by Martinez.
Martinez nailed a three-pointer and then made a free throw to put Sul Ross way out on top by 10 with 2:45 left.
Victoria Aguayo added to the Lobo lead with a layup as Sul Ross held a 13-point lead at the end of three.
The Cougars fought all the way back in the final quarter to tie up the game at 72-all with 5:55 on the clock.
Aguayo put the Lobos ahead after making two free throws.
Sul Ross revamped its lead to four, but the Cougars clawed their way back to tie up the score at 80-all with 1:45 to go.
Diaz scored with a layup after Bunger got a crucial steal with 1:26 on the clock.
The lead changed six times while the score was tied eight times throughout the contest.
Rokas finished with 20 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals while Martinez added with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Carmosino and Camryn Medina each finished with nine points.
Sul Ross won the rebounding battle, 47-32. The Lobos finished 19 of 28 from the free throw line.
