MEN'S SOCCER: Cowboys battle past Lobos 3-1

Rafael Paiva scores for Sul Ross

It's been two weeks since the Sul Ross State men's soccer team scored a goal.

The opportunities have been abundant in previous matches, but the situations were unlucky.

On Saturday evening, the Lobos ended that dry spell on offense by notching a goal from Rafael Paiva during the 55th minute of the second half against the Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys at the Lobo Soccer Field.

The end result wasn't what the Lobos were hoping for as the Cowboys prevailed with the 3-1 victory.

Hardin-Simmons tallied the first goal during the 21st minute when Austin Wills broke the ice.

A minute later Jakob Fiol put the Cowboys ahead 2-0.

Fiol found the back of the net once more during the 58th minute to help the Cowboys gain some breathing room in the second half.

The Lobos tallied six shots, with three coming at the mark.

Justin Quinonez had three shots while Israel Torres and Jair Moreno each had one shot. Julian Sandoval made six saves in the net.

Hardin-Simmons managed to out shoot the Lobos with 16 shots.

>> RECORDS: Sul Ross 0-9-2 (0-6); Hardin-Simmons 5-5-3 (4-1)

>> UP NEXT: The Lobos travel to Irving to take on the University of Dallas for a nonconference match at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20.
