On paper it was going to be a classic west Texas shootout between the Sul Ross State women's soccer team and the McMurry War Hawks.
The Lobos had won four meetings in a row from 2015-2018 before earning two straight draws in 2019 and during the spring of 2021.
Last fall, the War Hawks won a nail-biter by one goal over Sul Ross.
The stage was set on a warm Thursday afternoon at the Lobo Soccer Field.
Sul Ross fought valiantly, but McMurry came away with the 2-0 shutout.
The match was scoreless early on the first half until Olivia Quintanilla broke the ice with a goal in the 34th minute.
Sul Ross battled and tried to stay within reach until the War Hawks tallied another goal in the 67th minute from Emily Holland.
During the 85th minute, the Lobos had a chance to erase the shutout when
Judith Macias attempted a penalty kick, however goalkeeper Priscella Caruso kneeled down to her left to make the save.
Sul Ross tallied 10 shots with seven coming at the goal.
Deserie Herrera and
Yissel Olivares had two shots on goal each.
Macias had three shots while
Joanna Estrada added with two.
Alitzel Ybarra made four saves in the net.
>> RECORDS: McMurry 5-4-2 (3-1); Sul Ross 3-6-1 (0-4-1)
>> UP NEXT: There are only four games left in the regular season, two of which are at home. Sul Ross hosts Hardin-Simmons at 1 p.m. Saturday.
