ALPINE, Texas -
Caelyb Kerley's game-winning jumper with 2.9 seconds left finished off a 19-point second-half comeback in an 81-79 final over Hardin-Simmons on Saturday.
"I'm proud of our guys for battling back," said head coach
Xavier Webb. "They stepped up and made some big time plays not only offensively but more importantly on the defensive end. What a finish to the game with
Caelyb Kerley knocking down a shot we've seen him hit multiple times. It was a true team effort and our 4:1 mantra is showing."
First Half
HSU opened with an 8-2 lead until the Lobos answered with an 8-0 run for a 10-8 advantage.
Trey Nelson and
Logan Dixon hit back-to-back triples before
Eli Gonzalez took the lead with a layup. Sully's largest lead of the first half came at 14-10 after back-to-back jumpers from Dixon and
Mitchell Martinez. It was their final lead of the half as the Cowboys went on a 9-0 run and set the pace the rest of the first for a 43-32 lead at the break.
Second Half
The Cowboys continued to hold a double-digit lead, eventually upping it to 57-38 with under 15 minutes left. Sully then quickly got it to 10 with a 9-0 answer. Down 61-48 midway through, the Lobos stormed back with a 17-0 run.
Julian Paredes gave Sully their first lead of the second half on a triple with seven minutes left for a 62-61 lead. The run then finished with a
Caelyb Kerley jumper and later a
Daveone Bass free throw for a 65-61 advantage. It looked to be under control after a Kerley layup made it 72-66 with under four minutes left, but HSU came back with a 7-1 run for a 73-73 tie with just over two minutes left. Paredes later hit a jumper for a 75-73 lead, but a Cowboy triple put HSU ahead by one. Tied 76-76, Kerley remained hot and sank a triple with under a minute left to lead 79-76. The Cowboys would not go away, answering with a game-tying three-pointer the next time down the floor to force a Sully timeout. With 2.9 seconds left, Kerley finished off the Cowboys with a jumper that sealed the deal in an 81-79 win.
