ALPINE, Texas - Volleyball kept it close in each set of their home opener on Tuesday night at the Gallego Center but fell 3-0 to visiting Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Set 1:
UMHB opened play with the first three points before
Loren Garcia put the Lobos on the board with a kill.
The Crusaders held the early momentum and eventually took a 10-3 lead.
Sully cut it to five on a 4-2 answer with the help of three attack errors and a kill by
Taryn Griner for a 12-7 score.
Down 14-7, the Lobos trimmed the deficit to four with a 6-3 answer. Canaba started with a kill before back-to-back attack errors gave Sully their next two points. Griner provided the next two with kills before another attack error by the Crusaders made it 17-13.
UMHB answered with the next three and held at least a five-point lead down the stretch for a 25-19 win in set one.
Set 2:
Loren Garcia used a setup from Canaba to tie it 1-1 early in set two.
The Lobos took their first least of the day after a 7-2 run put them ahead 11-10.
Isabella Ruiz and Griner used early kills to cut it to 8-7. UMHB got the next point before an attack error and a service ace from
Faith Herrera tied it at 9-9. Sully took their first lead with another kill from Griner and an ace from
Mia Bella Ruiz for the 11-10 advantage.
UMHB was quick to answer with a 9-2 run for a 19-14 lead.
The Lobos had an answer themselves with a 5-1 run that saw two kills and an ace from Canaba and a kill from Griner to cut it to 20-18.
Mia Bella Ruiz made it a two-point game again with a kill at 21-19, but the Crusaders finished on a 4-1 run for a 25-20 win in set two.
Set 3:
Canaba opened the third set with a kill off an assist by
Kamrynn Caruth for a 1-0 score.
UMHB came back with the next three for their first lead of the set.
Kills from
Loren Garcia and
Mia Bella Ruiz twice cut it to one before UMHB went up by as many as three.
A kill from
Daniella Garcia and an attack error put Sully within one at 7-6.
The Crusaders were able to up their lead to five with a 5-1 run for a 13-8 advantage.
Back-to-back attack errors started a 4-1 Sully run. Canaba and Griner finished it with kills to trail 14-12.
Canaba soon got it back to two again with a kill, but a 5-0 answer put UMHB ahead 20-13.
Griner used back-to-back kills to stop the run and trail 20-15.
UMHB looked to have it locked down with a 3-0 response for a 23-15 lead before back-to-back kills from
Mia Bella Ruiz and
Loren Garcia made it 23-17.
The Lobos wouldn't go down without a fight and used a 4-0 run to cut it to three.
Loren Garcia and Canaba started with kills. An attack error proceeded before another kill from
Loren Garcia made it 24-21.
The Crusaders were able to thwart Sully's efforts with a kill to take the set 25-21 and sweep the match.
Caruth finished with a double-double after compiling a team-high 17 assists to go with 13 digs.
Griner finished with a team-high 13 kills.
Canaba had eight kills, 15 assists and five digs.
Also in double digits were Herrera with a team-best 17 digs and
Tatyana Colon added 11 digs.
Sully falls to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. UMHB moves to 6-0 and 2-0.
The Lobos remain at home and will next host Hardin-Simmons at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 10 at Gallego Center.
