Volleyball lassos first conference win with sweep of Cowgirls #SRSU | #ASCvb | #d3vb

ALPINE, Texas - Volleyball treated a boisterous Gallego Center crowd to their first conference win of the season in a 3-0 sweep of visiting Hardin-Simmons.

"It was a great team effort," said head coach Troy Canaba. "I love the energy of the team and their passion for the game. A huge shout-out to the fans and the amazing atmosphere they brought!"

Set 1:
Taryn Griner opened the set with a kill for an early 1-0 lead before the Lobos fell behind 2-1.

The opening set remained close with HSU taking a 6-5 lead and holding it until Sully finally retook the lead with a late 4-1 run. Annika Canaba started with a kill before back-to-back attack errors from the Cowgirls cut the deficit to 21-19 and forced a timeout. A third straight attack error brought it to within one, but the Cowgirls got one back with a kill to go up two. Another attack error brought it to within one again before Griner tied the set with a block for a 22-22 score. Canaba then stepped up and delivered a service ace for the first lead since 5-4. Another HSU attack error setup another Canaba ace for a 25-22 win in set one.

Set 2:
The Cowgirls got out to an early 3-0 lead before Canaba got the Lobos on the board with a kill. Loren Garcia followed with a kill of her own to cut it to 3-2.

HSU again held a slim lead until a 4-0 answer started with a kill from Isabella Ruiz. An ace from Canaba followed before back-to-back kills from Isabella Ruiz and Canaba gave the Lobos a 7-5 lead.

The Cowgirls came right back with their own 4-0 response to lead 9-7 and held the lead until a 7-0 run put Sully ahead by five. The streak was assisted by blocks from Loren Garcia, Griner, Canaba, Daniella Garcia and a kill from Loren Garcia for a 17-12 lead.

Sully eventually upped their advantage to as many as nine with a service ace from Faith Herrera on the way to a 25-16 win in set two that was capped by back-to-back kills from Kamrynn Caruth and Griner.

Set 3:
Griner erased an early 1-0 deficit with a kill to start a 4-0 answer. Daniella Garcia then added a block before she teamed with Canaba for another. Canaba then finished the run with a kill to lead 4-1.

HSU answered back to tie it 5-5 before Canaba's kill paired with an attack error put the Lobos ahead 7-5.

Sully held a slim lead until the Cowgirls squeaked back in front with a 5-2 answer.

The Lobos took the lead back at 11-10 and eventually got it up to three on three occasions. The last came at 18-15 on a kill by Daniella Garcia.

HSU worked it back to an 18-18 tie before Sully upped it back to two with the help of a ball handling error and a kill from Loren Garcia for a 20-18 advantage.

Canaba was a force down the stretch, twice using kills to go ahead by two with the second putting the Lobos a point away at 24-22.

The final point came on an attack error from the Cowgirls to give Sully a 25-22 win in set three and the sweep of Hardin-Simmons.

Canaba finished with a double-double of 12 kills and 12 assists to go with seven digs. Her 12 kills were a game-high and she also had a game-best three service aces.

Caruth also sported a double-double with a game-high 17 assists with 12 digs.

Herrera had a game-best 17 digs and added two service aces.

The Lobos even their season record to 3-3 and conference record to 1-1. Hardin-Simmons falls to 0-1 and 0-1.

Sully finishes the week at the Gallego Center on Saturday, September 11 at 12:00 p.m. against McMurry.
