First-year coaches
Brett McMurray and
Austin Kiraly have accepted positions at Division II Lincoln University in Oakland, California.
Lincoln University will be playing their inaugural football season this Fall.
McMurray will serve as Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Line Coach for LU. Kiraly will be joining as Offensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator.
Coach McMurray joined the Lobos as defensive coordinator in February of 2020. Kiraly started in June of 2020 as run game coordinator and offensive line coach.
Under McMurray, the Lobos led the conference in forced fumbles and were tied for second in takeaways produced. The defense produced several conference awards including:
Cory McMahan - DB: Second Team Defense
Hunter Bunch - LB: Third Team Defense
Eduardo Garcia - DL: Honorable Mention Defense
"I had a great time coaching the players at Sul Ross, they are who I will miss the most," said McMurray. "I really appreciate the culture of Texas football and how the game was played. I will forever be grateful to Coach Pearce for his faith in me to lead the defense and allowing me the opportunity to come coach for him in Alpine. It was a huge part of my maturation as a coach and I really appreciate him for that experience and opportunity."
McMurray was also selected to the NCAA and NFL Coaches Academy in March.
The NCAA and NFL Coaches Academy provides current, full-time college football coaches at NCAA member schools an educational opportunity to build connections and develop leadership acumen to pursue their career aspirations. The 2021 program will take place in an engaging virtual setting, allowing for extensive cohort and speaker engagement throughout the two day event.
Participants will also learn about building a personal and professional brand, networking, managing budgets, player health and safety, messaging for the media, coaching contacts, building relationships in college, leading effectively, understanding the academic landscape and interviewing (through mock interview sessions).
The academy will meet virtually for a two-day event later this month.
Kiraly's offensive line improved on average rush yards per game and allowed only seven sacks in five games.
Ajani Batts and James White were both named to the ASC third team offense on the offensive line. Batts, White and the rest of the offensive line helped pave the way for running back
Ozias Wright to be named to the second team offense.
"To everyone at Sul Ross State University, thank you for the great opportunity to coach, teach and mentor in Alpine, TX for the past year," said Kiraly. "Thank you to
John Pearce and
Kevin Canty for your trust in me and support for me, and to the rest of the staff at SR for making our time there memorable."
