CLINTON, Mississippi - A first inning two-run shot from Miranda Martinez and seven strong innings from Jodie Vaughn were the difference in a 3-1 win over LeTourneau on Thursday afternoon in round one of the 2021 American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament.

Sully's offense got going early as Samantha Chavez doubled to left field for the first hit of the game. Two batters later, Miranda Martinez homered to left field to give the Lobos the early 2-0 lead.

LeTourneau plated one in the fourth inning to cut it to 2-1, but Sul Ross wasted no time getting the run back thanks to an RBI single from Heather Rios to bring in Veronica Rodriguez for a 3-1 advantage.

Jodie Vaughn continued her strong start with three more shutout innings the rest of the way for the 3-1 win over the Yellowjackets.

Vaughn went all seven innings with one unearned run on seven hits and six strikeouts.

Martinez led the way with the home run, a game-high two runs batted in and a run scored.

Payslee Sims and Veronica Rodriguez tied for a game-best two hits each.

This marks the second tournament win in program history for the Lobos. The first came on May 3, 2019 in a 2-1 win against Louisiana College.

Sully continues tonight at 8:00 p.m. in another single-elimination game against East Texas Baptist.
