ALPINE, Texas - Baseball looked for the series sweep Sunday, but Howard Payne scored three runs over the final two innings to hand the Lobos an 11-10 defeat in Sully's final game of the season.
Starter
Justin Holt pitched a scoreless first and was immediately rewarded with four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Tye Lindsey plated Ashton Leach on a fielder's choice that saw all runners safe after a throwing error.
Richard Bailey then stepped in and doubled home
Jorge Marquez and Carson Thor for a 3-0 advantage.
Adrian Munoz then grounded out to third to score Lindsey for a 4-0 score after one.
HPU cut it to one in the top of the second with a bases clearing triple for a 4-3 game going bottom two.
Marquez reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the inning that scored
Orlando Moreno for a 5-3 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the game in the top of the third with three runs for a 6-5 score.
Sully wouldn't stay behind for long with
Jett Hartley singling home Bailey in the bottom of the third for a 6-6 tie. Hartley then stole second before Moreno reached on an error to move Hartley to third.
Tyler Tupper then reached on an error to allow Hartley to score for a 7-6 lead.
Ian Craigie was on the mound by this point after relieving
Jacob Ochoa in the third inning. Craigie pitched a scoreless top of the fourth before Marquez led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to right center for an 8-6 advantage.
Craigie again pitched a scoreless fifth and HPU did the same in the bottom of the inning for an 8-6 score going to the sixth.
The Yellow Jackets were able to scratch across a pair of runs in the sixth for an 8-8 tie.
Lindsey broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth with an infield single to score Leech to go ahead 9-8.
After a scoreless seventh from
Kobe Fleming, Tupper singled home Munoz to take a 10-8 lead to the eighth.
HPU tied the game with one out in the top of the eighth for a 10-10 score that eventually went to the ninth. The Yellow Jackets were able to bring another run home in the top of the ninth and shutout the Lobos in the bottom for an 11-10 win.
Leech and Bailey each added a team-best two hits. Bailey matched Lindsey for a team-high two runs batted in.
Both Leech and Marquez scored two runs each.
