William Serrano of cross country named Sul Ross Man of the Year; all sports honored at Honors Convocation

William Serrano of men's cross country was honored as Sul Ross Man of the Year at Monday night's Honors Convocation at the Pete P. Gallego Center. The night included awards and honors from each sport and athletic training.

"When I received Man of the Year, my first thoughts were 'I'm not done yet!' said Serrano. "There's still volunteering to do, one more season of cross country, and hearts to connect with! This honor means that I must work harder like Pete to make more positive changes for the school I love: SRSU!"

The Pecos, TX native received the honor alongside Woman of the Year recipient Sarah Torres.

Each spring semester the outstanding woman and the outstanding man among the seniors are announced. To be eligible for this honor, the student must have a grade point average of 3.0 and must demonstrate qualities of good citizenship and leadership.

Serrano graduated in December 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and is currently studying a Master of Education with the goal of becoming a mathematics teacher.

He has served Sul Ross State University and the local community through Sully Productions, cross country, band, Math Club with multiple terms served as president, Student Service Fees Committee, and Disciplinary Committee, in addition to serving as an RA.

Serrano led men's cross country to team-best finishes in each of their three races this season. He finished 22nd out of 92 runners with a time of 29:39.6 and an average kilometer of 3:42 in their first meet on January 30 in Austin. Serrano then placed 20th out of 48 finishers with a time of 29:34.2 and an average mile of 5:56.9 on February 6 in Abilene. At the ASC Championships, Serrano finished 24th out of 66 finishers in a time of 29:07.9 and an average mile of 5:51.6 on March 3.

"This is one of the most prestigious awards at SRSU, and for a student-athlete to be selected is impressive," said President Pete Gallego. "Being a student-athlete is already such a commitment, but William is someone who consistently goes over and beyond across campus and along with Sarah, is deserving of this award. It was a great night to honor so many of our students who have stepped up academically and athletically."

Serrano was joined by numerous student-athletes who were recognized Monday night.
