ALPINE, Texas - Sul Ross and Howard Payne combined for 87 points and 1,025 yards of total offense in a high-scoring homecoming that saw the Lobos on the wrong end of a 53-34 loss.
After HPU opened the game up 7-0,
Ozias Wright found the end zone on the ground from 22 yards out with 4:41 left in the first. That capped a three-play, 47-yard drive in 55 seconds.
Jaden Brown's extra point was good for a 7-7 tie.
The Lobos stopped the Yellow Jackets on their next drive but were pinned deep in their own territory to start theirs. Quarterback
Jaden Pete was sacked on the first play of the drive in the end zone for a safety and a 9-7 HPU lead at 3:11.
Sully's defense stepped up as
J Contreras intercepted a pass at the Lobo 17-yard line and returned it to the 22 but were pinned deep again after a block in the back was called. The offense returned the favor and proceeded to go on a seven-play, 92-yard drive over the next 2:04. Pete hit
Corey Driver for 36 yards on third down to get the offense moving. Pete found
Dre'Chan Moody two plays later on a 44-yard pass to the HPU 11. A face mask penalty was called on the play to put the Lobos deep in Yellow Jacket territory. Wright was called on two plays later and rushed for a six-yard touchdown and a 14-9 lead with 12:57 left in the second quarter.
The Lobos then kicked off and immediately started a new drive after
Frank Melendez forced a fumble that he also recovered at the 32-yard line of HPU.
Jaden Pete shared time with
Clayton Maxwell at quarterback throughout the game. It was Maxwell's turn to lead the Lobos and he did just that with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Driver for a 21-9 lead just 1:06 after their last score.
Howard Payne righted the ship offensively the rest of the first half, scoring the next 20 to take a 29-21 lead to the half.
The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 39-21 in the third quarter until Brown kicked a 41-yard field goal with 3:20 left in the third for a 39-24 score.
HPU went on to score another touchdown in the third to lead 46-24 heading to the fourth.
Sully outscored the Yellow Jackets 10-7 in the fourth with a 38-yard field goal by Brown and a late two-yard rushing touchdown by
Kendrick Jefferson but ultimately fell 53-34.
Pete and Maxwell combined for 248 yards through the air.
Wright rushed for a team-high 50 yards and two scores on the ground.
Moody led all Lobos with five receptions and 79 yards.
The defense forced five fumbles on the day and recovered two. They had seven tackled for loss and one sack.
Ronin Williams led the game with nine tackles and
Hunter Bunch was not far behind with eight.
The Lobos fall to 0-3 on the season and 0-3 in conference play. HPU picked up their first win to go to 1-1 and 1-1.
Sully concludes their season on Saturday, March 20 at home against Hardin-Simmons.
